What classic EastEnders episode is airing tonight?
With EastEnders on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, BBC One have confirmed they’ll be airing classic episodes of EastEnders every Tuesday in the soap's usual slot – beginning this evening.
First up is the iconic two-hander between Den and Angie Watts, which originally aired in October 1986.
The episode – the soap’s 174th – saw Den drop the bombshell to Angie that he’s leaving her for one of his other women.
But Angie – desperate to keep womaniser Den in her clutches – lied that she was terminally ill and only had six months to live.
The episode paved the way for what has to be one of the most iconic soap moments of all time – when Dirty Den brutally served Angie divorce papers on Christmas Day after discovering her awful lie.
Originally airing back in 1986, the episode saw over 30 million viewers in the UK tune in to watch the drama.
Back in 2018 Anita Dobson – who played Angie on the BBC soap – spoke about the iconic episode to Digital Spy: "I'm absolutely thrilled because to have made something that's so iconic and that people are actually watching again – as well as a new generation – is wonderful and magical. I can hold it up as an achievement in my life."
What classic EastEnders episodes will be airing next week?
EastEnders have confirmed that the explosive reveal of Sharon’s affair will air next week on Tuesday, June 30 at 7.30pm.
The iconic episode – dubbed ‘Sharongate’ in the press – saw Sharon’s jaw drop as her affair with her husband Grant’s brother Phil was broadcast to the whole of the Queen Vic.
A brutal fight ensued between the brothers as they turned to violence to resolve the situation.
EastEnders have also confirmed that the explosive reveal of Max and Stacey’s affair will be broadcast in the coming weeks.
In addition, fans can take a trip down memory lane by watching other old episodes from 2008 on BBC iPlayer.
Four consecutive episodes will be shown on BBC Four a week – before being added to the iPlayer.
The episodes on offer last night (June 22) allowed fans to relive Frank’s funeral and Bianca’s struggles to protect her kids.
When can viewers watch Secrets From the Square?
Along with the classic episodes, BBC One is airing spin-off series Secrets From the Square every Monday at 8pm.
The series’ first episode – which aired yesterday (June 22) – kicked off with Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright spilling some great behind-the scene-secrets as well as teasing what’s in store for their characters when the soap returns later this year.
Host Stacey Dooley will also be speaking to Walford legends including Letitia Dean, Adam Woodyatt, Diane Parish and Tameka Empson in the coming weeks.
EastEnders fan Stacey said of her new hosting role: “I’m delighted to be hosting Secrets From the Square. I grew up watching EastEnders, so walking on to Albert Square was a surreal experience as well as taking a trip down memory lane and interviewing some of the legends of Walford has been great, I’ve loved every minute of it!”
