EastEnders' Jake Wood takes stand against bullies who mock gingers
EastEnders star Jake Wood has taken a stand against those who bully others for having ginger hair in several Twitter posts.
The 47-year-old actor, who plays the villainous and forever scheming Max Branning in the BBC soap, began his revolution on Wednesday after a video shared by BBC The Social saw ginger-haired people trying to sit in the sun.
Jake branded the post ‘bulls****’ and compared discriminatory treatment towards redheads to racism, writing: ‘Why is it socially acceptable to take the p*** out of someone for the colour of their hair and not for the colour of their skin?!
‘All gingers have experienced being teased and bullied. I’m not even joking @GingerParrotUK I’m happy to lead the army.’
In another post, Jake continued: ‘Discrimination, prejudice and bullying is wrong in any guise.
‘Why is it still socially acceptable to mock people with red hair? I, and many gingers, have had enough. Rise up my fellow redheads.’
Jake then shared a response from Ginger Parrot, a community for redheads that focuses of the work of ginger celebrities, who replied: ‘Let’s start a red-volution!’
The actor’s post garnered a lot of attention, with some unimpressed by his comparisons they pointed out the difference between racial discrimination and hair colour discrimination.
‘I mean, it shouldn’t be, but when throughout history have ginger-haired people ever been paid less, assaulted, imprisoned, enslaved or executed because of their hair colour? It’s not exactly equivalent, is it?’ wrote one person on Twitter.
Meanwhile, others were glad he spoke out and besides sharing their own experiences of cruel jibes, commented: ‘Thanks for standing up for us.’
