EastEnders' Phil turns informant and breaks Mitchell code to stay out of prison?
Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) has a huge dilemma on his hands in EastEnders, after he was made a proposition that could result in him staying out of prison.
The soap’s resident hard-man, as viewers know, is facing life behind bars for his role in the death of Vincent Hubbard (Richard Blackwood).
Vincent memorably vanished without a trace over three years ago.
At the time, he was in desperate need of cash, and thus he told a police man that he would give him information on the heist carried out in Walford earlier that year in exchange for money.
The policeman agreed, but made it quite clear that he and his family would have to go into witness protection. Vincent attempted to get Kim to leave with him, but she refused, and ultimately she convinced him to stay.
Vincent, therefore, got into the police car and told the officer he wasn’t leaving the Square. However, the policeman was working for gangster Aidan Maguire (Patrick Bergin) – an old pal of Phil’s who had orchestrated the heist – and thus pulled a gun on him.
Vincent’s whereabouts were the subject of much mystery for three years, but a discovery led Kim (Tameka Empson) to the truth last year, and when she found out about Phil’s involvement in her husband’s demise, she vowed to destroy him.
With assistance from Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) and Denise, she succeeded in getting him arrested. Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) persuaded Phil to hand himself in after he tried to do a runner, convincing him he’d be out of jail in a couple of years.
But with DI Keeble investigating – and a shock confession from Aidan to boot – the hard-man is now in danger of spending the rest of his life incarcerated.
That is, until he was made an offer.
DI Keeble confronted him in Monday’s (Jnaaury 17) edition of the BBC One soap, telling him she’s been authorised to offer him a deal by her bosses.
Basically, if he turns informant, he can walk free.
If he were to accept this deal, it would mean he’d go against everything he believes and stands for as a Mitchell.
Ritchie (Sian Webber) offers her client some advice in Tuesday’s (January 18) episode, but will it be enough to convince Phil to do the right thing and make the right call?
Or will he truly be saying goodbye to life as a free man?
EastEnders airs these scenes on Tuesday January 18 at 7:30pm on BBC One.
