Fans React to the 'Justice League' Snyder Cut Coming to HBO Max

The seemingly impossible finally happened. The Justice League Snyder Cut is coming.

Around the time of its 2017 release, it became clear Warner Bros. had set aside director Zack Snyder’s vision of Justice League. Following a family tragedy, Snyder stepped away from the film. And Warner Bros. brought in The Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon to complete the movie. But in the process, Justice League diverged dramatically from what Snyder envisioned.

That’s when fans launched the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign. The goal was to get Warner Bros. to allow Snyder to finish his version of Justice League. And for years, passionate fans — with the support of many involved in the film — lobbied for the studio to green-light it. As expected, the fan response was nothing short of rapturous. Well, for the most part.

What we know about ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’

During a recent watch party for Man of Steel, Snyder and star Henry Cavill dropped the news. And the internet exploded. Officially, Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be released exclusively on HBO Max sometime in 2021. In the weeks leading up to the announcement, rumors had swirled the new streaming service could provide the Justice League Snyder cut with a home.

For ardent fans who’ve been pinning their hopes on the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, this is a dream come true. But it also has fascinating implications for the industry. This is the second instance in the past year when a major studio film has bowed to the demands of fans. After Sonic the Hedgehog‘s redesign and now this, will that become the norm?

On one hand, it can be reassuring that the creative teams behind these movies are taking into account what the people want. Then again, giving in to online fervor can be a slippery slope, one that robs the filmmakers of their creative freedom. In the case of the Justice League Snyder cut, the aim at least is to restore the director’s original vision rather than tamper with it.

Fans can’t wait to see how the film is different from the theatrical cut

When the HBO Max Twitter account released the news online, most users echoed the sentiments of Cavill and his co-stars Jason Momoa and Ray Fisher. All three actors took to Instagram to share their excitement. But Fisher — who plays Victor Stone aka Cyborg in the movie — seemed particularly moved by news of the Justice League Snyder cut.

“For those who fought. For those who believed. Thank you,” Fisher wrote on his Instagram account. The actor notably saw much of his storyline cut for the theatrical release and was reportedly the first cast member Snyder contacted with the update. Of course, Fisher was far from the only one thrilled that Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally on its way.

“This is the greatest thing to happen in 2020,” one person tweeted. Another user had a similarly thrilled reaction, tweeting out “THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS!!!!!!” Because of the campaign behind it, many fans saw the news as a personal win. But not everyone was convinced. “A bad film… but longer and with different color filters,” one user tweeted.

But is the ‘Justice League’ Snyder cut going to be completely finished?

Other than confirmation the project is officially in the works, there’s a lot fans still don’t know about the Justice League Snyder cut. Presumably, the new version will set aside footage from Whedon’s reshoots, including those featuring Cavill’s notorious digital lips. But it has not been announced to what extent Zack Snyder’s Justice League will adhere to the director’s vision.

If recent reports are any indication though, fans could be in for something big. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Snyder is reassembling his post-production team. That reportedly means new visual effects, editing, and music will be completed. Moreover, THR mentions Snyder may even tap the Justice League cast to record new dialogue for his director’s cut.

All in all, sources claim Zack Snyder’s Justice League could cost an additional $20 million to $30 million to produce. After all the rumors and teases about what Snyder’s version would include, fans can’t wait to see which scenes are added. The Justice League Snyder cut once seemed like a pipe dream, but now it’s time for fans to brace themselves for the real thing.
