Game of Thrones prequel series: Could Legendary character have major role?
HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed earlier this year that the pilot episode to Game of Thrones spin-off series Bloodmoon has been finished. Bloodmoon is being helmed by Kick-Ass star Jane Goldman and who is working with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. Cast members on Bloodmoon include Naomi Watts, who will be leading the show along with the likes of Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Mackie, Jamie Campbell Bower, John Simm and Miranda Richardson.
Just who these actors will be playing remains unknown but there are some clues.
The only thing we know about Watts is that she will portray “‘a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret” but beyond that little is known.
There’s also been lots of speculation about the other characters with fans desperate to know more.
Luckily, there are some clues about who could be in Bloodmoon from Martin’s other work.
Will Symeon Star-Eyes appear in Bloodmoon?
In the Game of Thrones encyclopaedia, A World of Ice and Fire there is mention of a number of figures who crop up in the annals of Westerosi history.
The entry about the Age of Heroes, states: “Names such as Bran the Builder, Garth Greenhand, Lann the Clever, and Durran Godsgrief are names to conjure with, but it is likely their legends hold less truth than fancy.
“And besides the legendary kings and the hundreds of kingdoms from which the Seven Kingdoms were born, stories of such as Symeon Star-Eyes, Serwyn of the Mirror Shield, and other heroes have become fodder for septons and singes alike. Did such heroes once exist? It may be so.
“But when the singers number Serywn of the Mirror Sheild as one of the Kingsguard – an institution that was only formed during the reign of Aegon the Conqueror – we can see why is it that few of these tales can ever be trusted.
“The septons who first wrote them down took what details suited them and added others, and the singers changed them – sometimes beyond all recognition – for the sake of a warm place in some lord’s hall.”
Although Symeon Star-Eyes is a mythical figure in the history of Wasteros, he could certainly appear in the forthcoming show.
The character is a knight who existed during the Age of Heroes and according to legend lost both of his eyes.
He is said to have replaced his eyes with star sapphires that he placed into the empty sockets, according to the singers.
Symeon is said to have fought with a long, double-ended spear that he would use to cut down his rivals.
The legends also say he went to the Nightfort where hellhounds fought.
He is described as a knight even though chivalry didn’t yet exist in Westeros. But beyond this, we know nothing more.
Taking Game of Thrones as a cue, the character of Symeon would be a strong addition to Bloodmoon given his complexity as a character.
Although it’s speculation at this time but Bloodmoon could exist at a time where magic is readily accepted than in the time of Game of Thrones, when dragons have died out and White Walkers are the stuff of bedtime stories.
Even The World of Ice and Fire is written with a healthy dose of scepticism which is misplaced given the events of Game of Thrones reveal that supernatural forces very much exist and present a deadly threat to humanity.
Despite his legendary status, Symeon could very well exist and have a role to play in the series.
On top of that, Symeon’s blindness mirror Arya Stark’s (Maisie Williams) own loss of sight in Game of Thrones and form a neat parallel between the two programmes.
