Gayle King of ‘CBS This Morning’ Reveals Her Dating Deal Breakers
CBS This Morning lead anchor GayleKing is a fan favorite for her ability to be a hard-hittingjournalist while possessing a genuine warmth and affable personality. Oftensharing tidbits of her personal life, including small details of her kids Kirbyand Will, King sometimes jokes about the single life and her dating prospects.
The news woman has previously commented on some qualities she would not be able to get past in a potential mate, as well as what she feels is most important in a significant other.
Bad ending
King was married to attorney William Bumpus. The two divorced in 1993 after 11 years of marriage, with King saying the split was due to her husband’s infidelity.
She discussed her marriage and divorce during a SiriusXM radiointerview with Will Smith in 2006, according to E! News. “I was married to acheater,” King said. “I went to marital counseling. I have been divorced since1993, so I’m all healed and everything. I have worked it out. I’m not bitter.I’m OK. I’m really OK.”
King also shared that though her ex-husband hurt her deeply, they were both determined to co-parent amicably. “It’s so important for peoplewho have children together to get along,” she explained. “Regardless of how youfeel about the other as a spouse, you still have these children to raisetogether.”
Bumpus had later apologized to King for his actions in a public statement. “I have been haunted with this life altering choice. Though I have dealt with this privately, I publicly apologize for the major transgression that dramatically changed all of our lives,” his statement read to Entertainment Tonight. “I have nothing but the utmost respect for Gayle and how she handled herself with grace. Despite the situation, she kept our children, as well as my relationship and involvement with them, as a clear priority.”
Deal breakers
When it comes to dating, King has some displeasing habits and attributes that she can’t get past. “I like them to have teeth, their natural teeth,” King said on The Talk in April, according to O, The Oprah Magazine. “A deal-breaker for me is smoking. I just don’t like smoking!”
The journalist revealed that over the years, she’s had to become more flexible on what she considers off limits “because it used to be that tattoos were a deal-breaker, tattoos and piercings… I now see that tattoos have become very mainstream. I used to be very judgmental about it, like ‘oh, biker, criminal…’” she said. “I’ve evolved! I have evolved!”
Advice from her BFF
For King, a sense of humor and some smarts areparamount when it comes to a potential partner. “Youreally want somebody who can make you laugh. I think laughter is so important,”she said. “I want intelligence. I want somebody you can have a conversationwith and isn’t all hung up on what you do.”
With her successful career and high-profile achievements, King realizes some men may be put off by her independence. Her bestie, Oprah Winfrey, shared some words of wisdom on what a future mate could bring to a relationship with King.
“Oprah said something to me once… Shesaid, ‘Look at your shoes… look at your coat… a guy is going to look at youand say there’s nothing I can do for her.’ I go, but I’m not looking for a guywho can do something for me. I want a guy who can complementme.”
Wise words from both King and Winfrey – no wonder they’ve beenBFFs for decades!
