Great British Bake Off’s surreal trailer sees Paul Hollywood worshipped as a god

Great British Bake Off fans have been given their first look at the slightly bizarre trailer for the new series of the popular baking show, set to hit screens within weeks.

The surreal trailer begins with a news bulletin style clip with a ‘reporter’ saying: “There is chaos in the supermarkets as baking fever sweeps the nation.”

Immediately, it is followed by footage of people grabbing baking ingredients like butter and eggs from supermarket shelves, with the clip set to the song All Together Now by The Beatles.

A stockbroker is seen discussing the value of butter on the trading floor as the advert continues to show baking fever at sky high levels.

Following footage of people get to grips with mixing, pouring and spreading, a woman is seen on her knees in front of an oven.

In a surreal twist, she is seen praying to a portrait of Paul Hollywood, who is depicted in almost godlike manner, before a halo-encircled hand reaches out to give her one of his famous handshakes.

The advert continues on this bizarre trajectory as a drag queen and pensioner are seen sharing doughnuts while submerged to their waists in a cup of tea.

The clip then cuts to schoolchildren eating a gigantic flatbread before we are subjected to an even quirkier scene of an egg and milk carton skipping with a silver whisk and an oven.

A group of miners are seen inside an oven, all holding Cornish pasties, while someone else is seen floating in a baking-themed hot air balloon.

A number of baking disasters are included in the trailer, including a burnt cake and an unset flan – a nod to the show’s infamous ‘Baked Alaska-gate’.
