HBO Series 'Chernobyl' is Nominated for 19 Emmy Awards

HBO’s latest disaster drama Chernobyl has received 19 Emmy nominations, making it the third most-nominated show. Chernobyl’s other two contenders are Game of Thrones, which earned 32 nominations, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which earned 20 nominations. HBO has stolen the show at the Emmy awards, earning an astounding total of 137 nominations altogether.

The five-part series picked up Emmy nominations for casting, directing, acting, makeup, and hairstyling. Chernobyl is up against Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora, FX’s Fosse/Verdon, HBO’s Sharp Objects, and Netflix’s When They See Us. What is ‘Chernobyl’ about?

On April 26, 1986, a horrific nuclear accident occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the north of the Ukranian SSR. HBO’s Chernobyl tells the story of the real-life accident, the aftermath, and the brave heroes who sacrificed their lives to mitigate the catastrophic damage from the disaster. From the controversial tapes left behind by Soviet chemist Valery Legasov to the brutal death of Soviet fireman Vasily Ignatenko, Chernobyl reveals every heartbreaking truth behind the infamous nuclear disaster.

Chernobyl even surprisingly dethroned HBO’s Game of Thrones by outranking the fantasy-drama on IMDb’s list of “Top Rated TV Shows”.

Who stars in HBO’s ‘Chernobyl’?

Veteran actor Jared Harris, from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Mad Men, stars as the Soviet chemist Valery Legasov. Legasov was known for his investigation of the Chernobyl disaster where he left behind a series of audiotapes revealing the controversial truth behind the tragedy before taking his own life. Harris picked up a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

Stellan Skarsgård, from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Good Will Hunting, stars as Boris Shcherbina, the Soviet politician who worked to supervise crisis management throughout the Chernobyl disaster. Skarsgård earned a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. Emily Watson, from Punch-Drunk Love and Red Dragon, also earned a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her performance as the fictional Ulana Khomyuk.

Chernobyl also picked up an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Casting in the Limited Series category.

‘Chernobyl’ was a breakout hit

HBO’s Chernobyl encouraged subscribers to keep their HBO accounts after the landmark fantasy-drama Game of Thrones ended on its eighth season. Produced by Sister Pictures and The Huntsman: Winter’s War’s Craig Mazin, Chernobyl reached a total audience of 8 million viewers within its May debut and June finale.

“Our show was a labor of love by so many, so it was particularly gratifying to see how our cast and crew was acknowledged across the board. We all worked so hard to bring Chernobyl to the screen, and we’re overwhelmed by this recognition by our colleagues,” said Mazin.
