Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson became a grandmother for the first time earlier this year, when her daughter Princess Eugenie gave birth to August in February. On Tuesday morning, Sarah appeared on ITV daytime show Lorraine to talk about her new novel and opened up about the new member of her family.

Host Christine Lampard began: “So it’s a new novel, new career as you put it there Sarah, and a new chapter in your life really.

“Grandchildren have now happened, I mean that’s just a wonderful addition and I guess it creates lots of content doesn’t it? For future projects.”

“Yes, thank goodness, good point Christine!” Sarah exclaimed, laughing at the presenter’s suggestion.

She continued: “But what I love, Christine, more than anything – do you know what it’s so funny – is that of course I’ve had sisters, I’ve got daughters and I’m very good with Barbie dolls.

“In fact, my children weren’t allowed to make them, I had to do it because I would love making all the equipment and things.

“But, now I’m into trains and trucks and tractors and all that sort of stuff, which I’m going to learn.

“And I really find it fantastic that August is, he really is a little chap. People say to me ‘no he’s a boy’ and I say ‘no he’s a chap’.

“You know, he’s a good little chap and very much like his dad and I’m very excited,” she added.

However, Sarah made it clear she would be happy if baby August wanted to play with dolls too.

She explained: “Of course if he wants to go and play with Barbie’s that’s fine too, there’s no judgment.

“But, it’s quite fun learning about tractors,” Sarah added.

While on the show Sarah also praised her ex-husband Prince Andrew saying he’s doing “really good” as a grandfather.

She explained: “He can go for hours talking about football and all those sorts of things. And I’m like, ‘Ok, off you go.’

“It’s a joy to see him really shine as a grandfather. I think it’s very important, family unity – communicate, compromise, compassion,” she added.

Princess Eugenie shared the first photo of August back in February in a post on Instagram.

The family photo showed herself and husband Jack holding their newborn son.

The royal captioned the post: “We wanted to introduce you to August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.

“Thank you for so many wonderful messages. Our hearts are full of love for this little human, words can’t express.

“We are excited to be able to share these photos with you,” she added.

The Princess also thanked her midwife and all the essential workers who helped with the birth of her son.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
