Inside Love Island as series 5 comes to a close – its all loved ups and downs
Over the past four years, Love Island has shocked viewers with fights, proposals and even sex on screen.
So there were concerns about how this series would pan out.
Some questioned whether it should be aired at all, following the suicides of former islanders Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.
Producers, accused in the past of riling contestants, supposedly “banned” sex this time.
In the end, the controversial dramas of previous series, like Zara Holland losing her Miss Great Britain title for having sex in the hideaway, or Ofcom receiving 2,500 complaints over Dani Dyer’s distress, were missing.
In fact, this year’s competitors were more likely to make each other a morning coffee than get into slanging matches.
As the final aired last night, we take a look at some of our favourite ups and downs from the year Love Island grew up…
Worst Heartbreak
Curtis dumps Amy
They were the villa’s first golden couple.
So, fans could see Amy’s heart break when her “half boyfriend”, Curtis, returned from a few days away in Casa Amor, only to tell her that their relationship was missing a spark.
Amy had been planning to confess her love for the dancer, and left the villa in devastation just a few days later.
Viewers broke out in sympathy, with #OhAmy trending on Twitter.
Best Bromance
Curtis and Tommy
From riding each other like horses to confessing their “love” for one another, Curtis and Tommy have been inseparable throughout the series and are perhaps, the show’s closest couple.
Curtis said: “Tommy and I have a bromance. I think we have kissed four times."
Biggest Cringe
Tom and Maura
Tom and Maura were poised to spend the night together in the hideaway, before Tom joked to the boys: “Let’s see if she’s all mouth.”
Unbeknown to him, Maura was actually behind him.
Jaws dropped across the country and, needless to say, their relationship ended shortly after.
The Love Triangle
Michael, Amber and Joanna
No series of Love Island is complete without a love triangle.
And when Michael ditched Amber for Joanna, it was clear that there was some unfinished business between the former couple.
Not only did Michael’s heart race fastest for Amber in the lap dancing challenge, but he also refused to leave when Joanna was voted off the show.
Despite furiously denying his feelings for Amber, the firefighter later tried to couple up with her again and, when she refused, decided to rekindle his relationship with Joanna in the outside world. Confused yet?
Most Disgusting Moment
Anton gets Belle to shave his bottom
He made no secret of his love of having a smooth backside – even admitting to getting his mum to shave it when he was at home.
So, in the villa, Anton was determined to find somebody to ass-ume the role.
The honour was given to his new love Belle, who accepted the gruesome job with surprising grace – and even got her friend, Jourdan, to help out.
Snakiest Moment
Anton gives his number to the shop assistant
Not happy with the beautiful girls already in the villa, Anton decided to give his phone number to a Spanish shop assistant during one of the challenges.
And when his partner, Belle, found out she certainly considered checking out of their relationship.
Biggest Fight
Anna tackles Jordan
When Anna found out that Jordan had been flirting with new girl India – just a few days after making their relationship official – she was furious.
The pharmacist stormed over to the pair while they were chatting and screamed: “What kind of guy asks a girl to be their girlfriend and two days later they crack on with f***ing another girl?!”
Cutest Moment
Tommy asks Molly-Mae to be his girlfriend
After spending a few days apart in the Casa Amor challenge, Tommy decided the time was right to make Molly-Mae his girlfriend.
Roping in the assistance of her stuffed toy elephant, Ellie-Belly, the 20-year-old boxer, sprinkled the terrace with rose petals before telling Molly-Mae she was “his everything.”
Bad Geography
Where is Barcelona anyway?
Jourdan, Joanna and Belle proved that geography wasn’t their strong point when they puzzled over the locations of Dublin, Edinburgh, Rome and Barcelona.
Joanna pondered: “Is Italy in Rome or Rome in Italy?” While Jourdan announced to the group: “Barcelona is in Italy."
