John Boyega FEUD: The scathing ‘attack’ on Star Wars Rise of Skywalker co-star

John Boyega is the London lad who has made it big in the acting world. After first coming to the world’s attention in indie flick Attack the Block, Boyega is now a household name thanks to his portrayal as Finn in Star Wars. But what did he say to put a co-star’s nose out of joint, and are they OK now?

Everyone will remember how John Boyega’s Finn, in Star Wars, found a new friend and even potential love interest in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Love her or hate her, Rose (played by Kelly Marie Tran) became an important part of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and her relationship with Finn was a key part.

However, it looks as though there may have been some controversy off screen, especially after Boyega was forced to apologise for some comments made which could have been interpreted as an attack on Tran.

Following the release of The Last Jedi, Tran was the subject of a abuse from fans who did not like her inclusion in the film.

Many of the comments she received on social media were racist and misogynist, and eventually Tran was forced to delete her Instagram posts to avoid it.

Of course, this must have been incredibly upsetting for her at the time, and she was backed by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, who took to Twitter to defend his actor.

He wrote: “What we talk about when we talk about manbabies.

“On social media a few unhealthy people can cast a big shadow on the wall, but over the past four year I’ve met lots of real fellow SW fans.

“We like and dislike stuff but we do it with humour, love & respect.

“We’re the VAST majority, we’re having fun & doing just fine.”

Other fans leapt to her defence as well, sharing their shock at how ill-treated Tran had been.

On the press tour for The Rise of Skywalker, now a year on from Tran’s Instagram deletion, Boyega was asked about this by Variety’s Adam B Vary, and his response triggered fans’ belief he was throwing shade at his co-star.

He said: “Through social media, we get to engage, we get to have fun.

“But at the same time, for those who are not mentally strong, you are weak to believe in every single thing that you read.”

His response caused huge controversy, as fans believed he was referring to Tran directly, and perhaps explained why, according to the trailers, she was to play a far smaller role in the final film of the new trilogy.

However, according to Boyega, he was speaking from personal experience, as he explained in a Twitter statement.

He wrote: “In no way was I referring to Kelly when I made my comments although the interviewer mentioned her given the topic.

“I was really speaking from my own perspective throughout this franchise. Sometimes I’ve felt strong and sometimes I’ve felt weak.

“Badly worded though. I apologise.”

At the time of Tran’s Instagram debacle, Boyega defended her online, taking to social media to say: “If you don’t like ‘Star Wars’ or the characters understand that there are decision makers and harassing the actors/actresses will do nothing.

“You’re not entitled to politeness when your approach is rude. Even if you paid for a ticket!”

He also thanked fans who were kind and supportive to their process – so it seems his comments were just poorly worded rather than having a pop at Kelly Marie Tran.
