Laurel saves Jai and Rishi after blistering showdown in Emmerdale
Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) was devastated on Emmerdale recently when he discovered a shattering family secret. He’s adopted, and the man he’s called father for the past 47 years, Rishi (Bhasker Patel), is not his father at all.
Jai was sorting through some family documents looking for his divorce certificate, because he and Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) are planning to get married. But among the family papers he found official documents that revealed that he was adopted.
His immediate reaction was anger with Rishi that he’s kept this information a secret for the whole of Jai’s life and it wasn’t long before Jai confronted the man he’d always thought of as his father.
Rishi’s weak attempt at an explanation only made Jai more and more furious, and the knowledge that Manpreet (Rebecca Sarker) had also known about the adoption only made him more angry.
‘This is the first time he talks to his dad about it,’ Chris Bisson told us. ‘And he can’t control himself. And that is because rather than telling them the truth, Rishi is tricky.’

At Laurel and Jai’s engagement party Archie (Kai Assi) persuaded Rishi to come along, but in the ensuing confrontation in front of the other guests Jai realised he’d just spilled out the whole story. Mortified, he told Rishi to get out.
In upcoming episodes Laurel is worried by the continuing rift between Jai and Rishi.
She worries that the strain will drive Jai, a former addict, back on to drugs as he tries to process the massive shock he’s just been through.
She also knows that things are not going to improve until he sits down with Rishi and talks everything through.
Jai doesn’t agree and stubbornly refuses to speak to his dad, but with Rishi keen to reconcile with his son she’s hopeful she can make a breakthrough.
Chris speculated that Jai’s reaction is going to depend on whether Rishi is prepared to come clean.
‘I’m not sure that things will ever be the same between Jai and Rishi, or Jai and his parents, I should say,’ he revealed. ‘If they tell him the truth, then he’s got more chance of coming to terms with the revelations.
‘But until that happens, there certainly isn’t going to be any sort of reconciliation.’
