Love Your Garden viewers devastated over teen show stars death after cancer battle
Love Your Garden viewers were left heartbroken after it was revealed the teenage star of the show had died.
The ITV programme showed Alan Titchmarsh and his team transform the backyard of Harri Torr, a 15 year old battling terminal cancer. At the conclusion of the episode, which first aired in 2020 and was repeated on Tuesday (22 August), a tribute confirmed Harri had since tragically died from the disease.
The statement read: “We’re very sad to say that since this programme was made, teenager Harri has passed away.”
Fans of the show were left devastated by the news. One wrote on Twitter: “What a beautiful, brave, special soul. He was so excited for his garden transformation, so he could enjoy the time he has left in nature. So sorry to hear he has passed life is cruel. Rest in peace.”
Another viewer added: “Really hope Harri got to make some memories with his mum #loveyourgarden. What a brave young man #dustinmyeyes.”
A third said: “Oh no rip Harry may you be in your own beautiful garden somewhere over the rainbow.”
Harri was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2018 after suffering with what was originally thought to be a broken ankle. Later, doctors found tumours in his lungs and he underwent intensive chemotherapy and surgery – including an amputation below his left knee.
A year after completing the treatment, Harri was told the cancer had returned and was given between three months and a year to live. The brave teen spoke about his condition during the episode of Love Your Garden.
He said: “I was more worried about my family than myself and what they would have to come to terms with. It’s about making the most of life, even if you have a condition or cancer, you have to live every day like you’re dying.
“That’s how you have to live your life.”
Last year, Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway thanked the Love Your Garden team for a sweet gesture they made for husband Derek Draper while they helped her to transform her garden for her sick husband – who was struck down with Covid-19 in 2020 and was left needing round-the-clock care.
Speaking on the ITV breakfast show, the 56 year old discussed the amazing support the behind the scenes crew gave Derek during a conversation with co-hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard.
She said: “We still hadn’t quite got the lift working to the garden so it did involve the entire Love Your Garden team having to carry him down the stairs. So a big thanks to their muscle as he was able to get outside.”
Ben said how “lovely” it was that he was able to “enjoy” the garden with his family.
