Lucifer season 5 theories: Malcolm said Dan would discover Lucifer’s identity in key scene
The series, based on a spin-off from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman comics, features the life of Lucifer (played by Tom Ellis) who has abandoned his post in Hell to run a nightclub and consult with the LAPD on strange murder cases. After being cancelled by Fox, streaming site Netflix picked it up for two more thrilling seasons.
When fans last left the series, Lucifer had sealed the prophecy with a kiss with his true love Chloe Decker (Lauren German) and reclaimed his throne in the underworld.
Luficer revealed his demonic identity to Chloe back in season three, but fans have been speculating if season five will see other characters discover his secret.
At the top of the list is Daniel ‘Dan’ Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro), another homicide detective for the LAPD who works closely with Lucifer and Chloe.
Dan is Chloe’s ex-husband and father of Trixie (Scarlett Estevez), acting as a rival for Lucifer thanks to his close bond with his ex-wife.

However, despite his strong dislike for Lucifer, he still protected him when the corrupt cop Malcolm Graham (Kevin Rankin) was resurrected in an attempt to draw the fallen angel back to Hell.
Despite Dan’s altercation with Malcolm, who was resurrected by Amenadiel (D. B. Woodside) after what seemed to him like decades being tortured in the underworld, he is still none the wiser about Lucifer’s true identity.
Although, some fans have picked up on an intriguing scene in the first season that could foreshadow a major revelation in the upcoming season.
During a recent rewatch, Reddit user astrocanyounaut picked up on an illuminating coversation between Malcolm and Dan in the first season.
They said: “If/when Dan finds out, I want him to think back to Malcolm telling him about hell and reacting to that information being true. He flat out told him what his personal hell was!”
Rather than hot pokers and pits of lava, Malcolm is deprived of company, food and entertainment for his brief glimpse at eternal torture.
Once Dan inevitably finds out the truth about Lucifer, he may very well think back to this conversation with the deranged cop and realise with a shock that he was telling the truth the whole time.
With Lucifer retaking his position as ruler of Hell, fans have been speculating how the trickster could make his way back to Earth to tell Dan his secret.

*Spoilers ahead* – some fans have had a sneaky look at some behind the scenes photos, however, and have theorised season five could begin with a major death for the series.
One such fan commented: “Based on the BTS photos and rumors, if Dan does find out, the way he finds out will probably make Malcolm the farthest thing from his mind.”
To which they elaborated: “Granted, the BTS photos don’t have context but it’s not going to be a case of him realizing he is going to Hell, so much of him actually going to Hell after being killed.”
Some intriguing backstage photos could have revealed that Dan is killed near the start of season five.

Upon which he would discover that who he thought was a nightclub owner and homicide consultant is actually very much at home in the land of the dead.
As Malcolm’s twisted fate proved, though, just because Dan could start the season dead doesn’t mean the detective will remain such for the whole season.
Sadly, the coronavirus pandemic has stalled production of the season five finale, so fans may have to endure a long hiatus before new episodes begin to air on streaming platforms.
Lucifer season 4 is available to stream on Netflix.
