'Married at First Sight' Fans Think Olivia is a 'Debby Downer'
Married at First Sight fans have witnessed some very compatible couples this season — here’s looking at Amani and Woody as well as Bennett and Amelia. However, there have been two couples that have had fans questioning the “expert” matchmakers. That would be Christine and Henry, and Olivia and Brett. At first, most fans rallied behind Olivia against Brett, thanks to his behavior early on. However, some fans are beginning to splinter off and fall in line behind Brett after suggesting Olivia is simply not willing to enjoy herself.
Fans didn’t trust Brett at the start
Brett made a pretty bad first impression on Married at First Sight. The hopeful groom kicked off his time one the show with unabashed self-confidence.
“She’d be crazy if she’s not attracted to me,” he told producers during the first episode.
Brett also revealed he’s dated 45 women since his last serious relationship. He also started hitting on another woman during the bachelor party — one of Henry’s friends. Definitely not a good look to get drunk and flirty with anyone other than your wife-to-be.
Olivia was equally unenthused as fans when she watched the premiere episode herself.
“As for Brett, his dad did not seem thrilled and his siblings didn’t have much to say — the looks on their faces say it all. They all seemed shocked that he would even consider getting married given his dating history. Brett and his statistics…,” she told Us Weekly after viewing it.
Right off the bat, fans of the show started comparing Brett to Zach Justice, Mindy Shiben’s infamous husband from Season 10 of Married at First Sight.
The ‘Married at First Sight’ couple has big differences
Brett’s behavior during the premiere episode wasn’t the only red flag to crop up for the Married at First Sight couple. The two shared different viewpoints on a variety of things, including children and finances.
Olivia sat down to chat with Brett’s brothers, who brought up Brett’s interest in raising a family in the future. It’s become clear that Brett would like to have children, and his brothers soon discovered Olivia doesn’t feel the same way at all.
“So my response to that is I’m indifferent. I always say that I would prefer not to. I love kids, don’t get me wrong. Love my sister’s kids,” explained Olivia.
“I just have a lot of stuff I wanna do before I do that, if it’s in the cards for me. … He sounds like he wants to have kids one day, but like I said, I want to be selfish for a little while and enjoy my time.”
Olivia and Brett later butted heads about financing, when Olivia revealed she likes to spend on travel and other activities, where Brett prefers to save.
Fans call Olivia a ‘Debby Downer’
However fans may feel about Brett, they’ve begun to also harbor some judgments about Olivia as well. While Brett may seem like a player, some have begun to see Olivia as a Debby Downer by comparison.
“I think I’m going to start calling her Debby Downer. I get we only see an edited version of reality, but she has proved time and time again that nothing is ever good enough for her. If she’s on the constant defense and leads with skepticism, there’s no way the marriage will work,” wrote an irritated fan.
“Every time Olivia tries to rehash an argument I sigh. She is emotionally draining. Even when Brett answers her questions, she still thinks there’s more to be said,” added another user.
Not everyone agrees, though. Some users felt as though this callout was unwarranted, and that Brett is the one with no interest in anything.
“Only women are expected to be upbeat and perfect while their partner degrades, gaslights and looks at them like they’re a [child]. Most people can’t do that while maintaining their grace. She’s just giving him back some of his own treatment,” opined one commenter.
“I feel like Brett is the downer. Maybe alligator swamp tours and trivia aren’t your favorite things, but come on, you might as well try to have a nice time instead of complaining/making snarky comments and just generally bringing everyone down,” wrote another fan.
