Michael Angarano Returns to 'This Is Us' Tonight: Everything We Know About Nicky's Long Lost Love

When This Is Us Season 5 returns tonight, viewers will find out a lot more about Uncle Nicky’s (Michael Angarano) long-lost love — Sally. The little bit that we know about her came from a conversation that older Nicky (Griffin Dunne) had with his nephew, Kevin Pearson (Justin Hartley) and Cassidy Sharp (Jennifer Morrison). 

‘This Is Us’ Season 5, Episode 11: Nicky’s (Michael Angarano) long lost love

In This Is Us Season 4, Episode 4, viewers heard about Uncle Nicky’s (Michael Angarano) first love, Sally. The new episode of This Is Us Season 5, Episode 11, adds more to the story. In the meantime, here’s a recap of what we know so far about young Nicky and Sally. In season 4, Kevin bought a massive brand new RV and placed it right next to his Uncle’s old trailer. Nicky did not appreciate the gift, so Kevin decided he would live in it next to his Uncle.

“It was originally for someone else,” Nicky began his story to Kevin and Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison). “The trailer, Sally, we started dating before I got drafted. I was too chicken to ask her out, so Jack did it for me. We wrote letters during the war. We were going to drive across the country when I got back, but after a while, I just stopped writing.”

Nicky explained that he was “pretty broken” when he returned from the Vietnam War. However, he would try one last time to reconnect with Sally.

“But I decided I was gonna go for it — one shot at a life,” he said. “I got the 68 Boles Aero, practically took up all my savings, and I hitched it to my car, and I drove to Sally’s house.”

However, Nicky didn’t tell Sally that he was coming. When he got there, she wasn’t home.

“That was it; I realized it wasn’t meant to be,” Nicky concluded. “Then I drove off.”

When Kevin suggests that his Uncle could have an entirely different life right now, Nicky does not believe him. However, the new episode of This Is Us Season 5 revisits Sally and Nicky’s love story. Could the couple reconnect? Is that who Nicky is married to in the flash-forwards?

How did Nicky (Michael Angarano) meet Sally on ‘This Is Us’?

During This Is Us Season 5, Episode 11, fans find out more about how Nicky (Angarano) met Sally. In 1969, young Nicky had a heartfelt conversation with his brother Jack (Milo Ventimiglia). The Pearson family patriarch encouraged his brother to move out of their parents’ house and get his own place. However, Angarano’s character wasn’t interested in leaving the nest. 

Then, Jack suggested his brother find a girlfriend. That’s when viewers find out when and where Nicky met Sally on This Is Us. At the time, Angarano was working at a Vet clinic. Sally worked there with him, and Nicky smiled when talking about her. 

“A guy is walking on the moon right now,” Jack tells Nicky. “Ask Sally out on a date. Get the hell out of the house. C’mon. If he can do it, you can do it.”

Viewers already know that Jack ended up asking Sally out for Nicky. However, it worked. The two dated and then wrote letters when Nicky was overseas. 

When will ‘This Is Us’ viewers meet Sally?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, This Is Us executive producer Isaac Aptaker teased when fans might meet Sally. However, the answer was somewhat cryptic.

“[Meeting Sally] has been discussed,” Aptaker told the outlet. “It has been bandied about it. Nothing’s off the table.”

Hopefully, fans will have the chance to see Michael Angarano meet his on set long-lost love, Sally, on This Is Us soon.
