Miss America Competition Returning To NBC Next Year

There it is — Miss America. NBC said today that it will air the national competition next year for the first time since it cut ties with the event over then-candidate and then-owner Donald Trump’s anti-immigration comments in June 2015. Before that, the Peacock had aired the show for two decades.

Discussions are underway with potential venues for the 2020 Miss America Competition, which NBC will air live over two hours. ABC had it last year.

It will follow the 51 compelling candidates as they compete for scholarships to be used to continue their efforts toward community service and education, per the network and the Miss America Organization, which has operated the event since 2015. The show will highlight a diverse group of young students and professionals who are advancing the message of female strength, independence and empowerment through their efforts in the areas of scholarship, talent and social impact.

“NBC is excited to once again team with our friends at the Miss America Organization in what we know will be an entertaining telecast featuring so many inspiring women,” said Doug Vaughan, EVP Special Programs and Late Night at NBC Entertainment.

NBCUniversal severed its ties to Trump soon after he announced his White House bid in a speech that included referring to Mexican immigrants as rapists and drug dealers and such. At the time, NBCU said: “At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump.”

The future POTUS responded by threatening to sue the company. He said then: “If NBC is so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/Miss USA will be determined in court.”

Reelz stepped in to air the show that year.
