Monty Don marks what would have been his dog Nigel’s 12th birthday
Monty Don has shared a heartbreaking tribute to his late golden retriever Nigel, on what would have been the dog’s 12th birthday.
The presenter’s pet sadly passed away earlier this week, and today he marked his pooch’s birthday.
‘It would have been Nigel’s 12 birthday today,’ Monty wrote on Twitter. ‘I shall raise a glass in celebration of his life.’
Broadcaster Reverend Richard Coles said he would join Monty in toasting the dog’s life, commenting: ‘Me too!’
Nigel became the surprise star of BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World, receiving his own fan mail, social media fan accounts and lent his name to Monty’s book Nigel: My Family And Other Dogs.
Before his book was published, Monty said: ‘I am just as much a fan of Nigel as any besotted viewer.’
On Monday, Monty revealed Nigel had died after he was taken ill and is now buried with ‘lots of tennis balls’.
‘I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died,’ he penned on Instagram. ‘To the end he was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self.
‘But he was suddenly taken ill and he slipped quietly away with no pain or suffering and is now buried in the garden with lots of tennis balls.
‘Rest now old friend. See you in the sweet bye and bye.’
Nigel was frequently seen following Don around the garden with Don’s other dog Nellie.
This week, Don told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme that Nigel had been more than a companion and had helped him with his struggles with depression.
