'NCIS: Hawaii': Fans Know Exactly Why Next 'NCIS' Spinoff Is Hawaii
CBS is looking to expand the NCIS franchise with another spinoff rumored to be in the works. The new series NCIS: Hawaii is still in the early stages of development, but NCIS fans are already throwing in their theories about how the writers will introduce the Hawaii team.
One idea has, however, picked up momentum, and it makes sense. Fans now claim that the NCIS franchise will be ditching the mainland and setting up production in America’s 50th state. Find out why.
‘NCIS’ was voted most-watched television series
During the 2012-2013 network television season, NCIS finished its tenth season ranking as the US’s most-watched tv series. The show follows the Naval Criminal Investigative Service Major Case Response Team in Washington DC. The team is supervised by Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who is a former Marine Gunnery Sergeant.
The NCIS team specializes in investigating murders and examining crime scenes. Gibbs’ team included Caitlin Todd, a former member of the secret service, Anthony DiNozzo, a detective from Baltimore, Timothy McGee, a computer expert, and Eleanor Bishop, a threat assessment specialist and security analyst.
The team also includes Nicholas Torres, Alexandra Quinn, Ziva David, Dr. Jack Sloane, Abby Sciuto, Kasie Hines, Jimmy Palmer, Donald Mallard, and Clayton Reeves.
CBS is canceling one spinoff and is developing another one
CBS has been in talks with the cast and crew of NCIS: Hawaii to get the show on the road. Insiders say that one of NCIS‘ showrunner from the hit spinoff NCIS: New Orleans will be taking over running NCIS: Hawaii.
Chris Silber’s schedule was made free after CBS announced that they would be canceling the New Orleans spinoff after airing for seven seasons. The show’s final episode is scheduled to air in May 2021.
NCIS: New Orleans focuses on investigating crimes committed by military personnel. The show’s star Scott Bakula issued a statement on the series finale saying that it makes him sad to end the show, but he will miss the music. Bakula thanked CBS for giving them a platform to narrate their story for seven years.
CBS was also working on launching another spin-off called NCIS: Red. The network tried to launch the show through a backdrop pilot. If the series had gotten the green light, it would have focused on an anti-terrorist unit called the Red Team. NCIS: Red unfortunately never made it past the backdoor pilot.
As for the new show NCIS: Hawaii, fans have been floating ideas for who they’d want to see heading the new team at NCIS: Hawaii, and it’s none other than Anthony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly. DiNozzo carried the team back at NCIS with his humor and even formed a relationship with his colleague Ziva, resulting in a daughter. When Ziva died, he left NCIS to focus on being a father to his daughter and investigating Ziva’s death.
Weatherly starred in a drama show on CBS called Bull, where he played the titular role. The show has been on the air for five seasons, but ratings for the fifth season have been down significantly. Fans are hoping that if Bull gets canceled, Weatherly should reprise his role as DiNozzo and get his own show.
Fans know where the show’s location is
While still on the subject of fan speculations and theories, a recent Reddit conversation about the new NCIS spin-off has gained traction due to the ideas being floated around. Fans speculate that CBS will be making Hawaii the next location of the new show since the network has a production facility in the 50th state.
According to Deadline, CBS used the Hawaii facility to shoot for Hawaii Five-0, and since the show is over, CBS will likely want to make use of the facility for the new NCIS spin-off. One Reddit user said “CBS doesn’t want to deal with the cost of taking it down.” More users backed the claim that CBS will use the facility to shoot the NCIS spin-off.
