New Batman Series Confirms a Marvel Star to Play the Titular Dark Knight

Robert Pattinson’s dons Batman’s grimdark attitude, while a much different Batman heads to HBO Max. Batman: The Audio Adventures casts the lead role with Marvel actor Jeffrey Wright voicing the Dark Knight. The series serves as a hilarious light callback to the Adam West Batman era of the 1960s.

DC’s ‘Batman: The Audio Adventures,’ series hits HBO Max on Batman Day

DC plans to release the series on Batman Day, Sept. 18. The series follows a more serialized approach to the Dark Knight, harkening back to some of the campiness in the Adam West Batman series, and laughs are sure to ensue.

Especially with a cast overstuffed with comedians and Saturday Night Live alumnus. Confirming many recognizable names, Digital Spy reports actors in undisclosed roles for Batman: The Audio Adventures.

Chris Parnell, who plays Cyril Figgis in the FX show Archer, Seth Meyers (Late Night with Seth Meyers), Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso), Bobby Moynihan (Monsters University and The Secret Life of Pets), and Brooke Shields (Suddenly Susan) all star in various roles for the show.

The cast members with confirmed roles offer a bigger glimpse into the series.

Jeffrey Wright, The Watcher in Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ plays Batman

Jeffrey Wright stars in the titular role of Batman: The Audio Adventures. Starring as The Watcher in Marvel’s What If…? audiences have grown accustomed to his voice-overs recently.

This sees a step up from his casting as Commissioner Gordon in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman.

Another Marvel star from the Netflix side of things is Rosario Dawson as Catwoman. Starring in several Marvel shows, like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders as Claire Temple AKA Night Nurse, she also lent her voice to DC properties.

Playing Batgirl in The Lego Batman Movie, her role as Catwoman sees her on the other side of the law.

Confirmed to play the Riddler is John Leguizamo (Ice Age, ER). While Batman: The Audio Adventures marks his first foray into DC properties, he appeared in the comic book movie Spawn in 1997 as the villain Violator.

A different kind of tone for Jeffrey Wright’s Batman

Dennis McNicholas, another Saturday Night Live connection, wrote the 10-episode season.

“His writing for [Saturday Night Live] has been nominated for eight Primetime Emmy Awards and won the award in 2002,” Digital Spy notes.

McNicholas is no stranger to tackling over-the-top, often satirical comedic adventures, and Batman: The Audio Adventures looks to follow in the same vein.

“Gotham City comes to lurid life in the theater of your mind with a sensational pageant of technicolor villainy unlike any other on Earth, [with] mafioso Penguins, thieving Catwomen, terrorizing Riddlers, killing Jokers,” the official synopsis reads.

Then the description ends with a perfect summary. “Some problems can only be solved by a billionaire in a bat costume.”

Batman Day begins Sept. 18, 2021, and then the Jeffrey Wright adventures sleuthing around the dark city start on HBO Max.
