SEPTEMBER promises a ton of TV treats for viewers — here are the best new releases, movies and TV shows to stream on Disney+ this month.

September 4

Futurama – Season 11

In case you missed it, there’s a new season of Futurama out right now. After a ten-year hiatus, fans can enjoy the return of fan favourite characters Fry, Leela, Bender, Amy, Kif and Nibbler. But, it’s not all nostalgia as the show has also kept up with the times — so expect to see topics like bitcoin, cancel culture, streaming TV and vaccines make an appearance in Season 11. 

Episode 7 airs on September 4, and new episodes will continue to drop weekly until Episode 10 concludes the season on September 25.

September 5

Only Murders in the Building – Season 3

Only Murders in the Building returned to Disney+ in August and it continues into September with Episode 6 which is released on September 5. New episodes will premiere every Tuesday until October 3, and see fan-favourite characters Mabel, Oliver and Charles investigate another New York murder. 

After Ben Glethroy, the star of Oliver’s Broadway play, dies on stage on opening night, the trio must find the killer. Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin are joined by a host of familiar faces this season, including Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep. 

Walt Disney Shorts

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit takes centre stage in All Wet and Trolley Troubles, two animated shorts from 1927. In the first, hot dog vendor Oswald gets a job as a lifeguard in hopes of wooing the lovely Fanny Cottontail, who pretends to get into distress to catch Oswald’s attention, only for the danger to become real.

The second sees Oswald take on another new job as a trolley conductor where he tries to keep things on track, but in true Disney fashion there’s a host of comedic obstacles that get in his way. 

September 6

The Little Mermaid 

The live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid is finally coming to Disney+ on September 6 after its theatrical release back in May. This modern reimagining of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale sees Halle Bailey take on the role of the titular mermaid Ariel. She’s joined by Daveed Diggs as the singing crab Sebastian, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Jonah Hauer-King as her beloved Eric. 

I Am Groot – Season 2

Vin Diesel reprises the role of his MCU character Groot in a new batch of shorts coming to Disney+ on September 6. Per the official synopsis, this little twig finds himself in plenty of trouble over the course of five episodes. 

It reads: “This time, Baby Groot finds himself exploring the universe and beyond aboard the Guardians’ spaceships, coming face-to-face—or nose-to-nose—with new and colourful creatures and environments.”

Ahsoka is on a mission to save the galaxy this SeptemberCredit: LucasFilm – Disney+

Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano flew onto screens at the end of August in her eight-episode series, which continues weekly until October 4. September 6 marks the arrival of Episode 4, which will continue Ahsoka’s journey. 

From here on out, the series will follow the former Jedi Knight as she moves forward with her mission. Viewers will inevitably see her find Eman Esfandi’s Ezra Bridger (who’s been missing since the end of Star Wars: Rebels) and face off against Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) in order to save the Galaxy. 

Justified: City Primeval

FX’s eight-episode neo-Western crime drama Justified City: Primeval premieres on the Disney streamer on September 6. The series is a continuation of the Justified franchise and follows Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens who’s now working as U.S. Marshall in Miami, while helping to raise his daughter. However, he soon finds himself off in Detroit chasing down Clement Mansell, aka, “The Oklahoma Wildman” (Boyd Holbrook) who’s been evading authorities for years. 

September 13

Welcome to Wrexham – Season 2

Happy news for football fans as Welcome to Wrexham, another FX series, is set to return to Disney+ on September 13. The second season of the sports documentary series continues on from the first, following actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds as they take control of the third-oldest football team in the world. Rob and Ryan hold the promise of victory for Red Dragons as they hope to guide this Welsh team as they fight to get out of the National League and back into the English Football League.

Animals Up Close With Bertie Gregory

British wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory, aka the man behind Resurrection Island and The Big Freeze, is back with another National Geographic series; Animals Up Close. 

In the six-part series, “Bertie takes us to the most spectacular corners of our planet — from Antarctica to Africa and South America to Asia — tracking down extraordinary animals to capture their daily lives like never before.” The show, which premieres on September 13, focuses on revealing the biggest challenges currently facing our planet and the extraordinary animals on it.  

Butter Man: The Slickest Mexican Thief

Butter Man: The Slickest American Thief is a Latin American series coming to the Star section of Disney+ on September 13. It stars Narcos: México actor Alberto Guerra as the titular thief and con artist Emiliano Escamilla. 

The series follows Emiliano as he sets out on a personal quest to avenge his mother, who was wrongfully imprisoned for the crimes of his father, who was known only as El Mantequilla. Now, operating as the new Mantequilla, Emiliano will come up against detective Elena Robles (Mayra Batalla) and reporter Pablo Garduño (Iván Aragón). But, this won’t be a straightforward story, as they’ll each face temptation and corruption at every turn. 

Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The Making of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the next instalment of the anthology docuseries Marvel Studios’ Assembled. This one-off TV special chronicles the making of the emotional final instalment of the Guardians trilogy. It features special interviews and commentary from cast and crew, including James Gunn, Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldaña, as they say goodbye to this iconic franchise. 

September 15

Master & Apprentice: A Special Look at Ahsoka

Much like Marvel Studios’ Assembled, Master & Apprentice is a behind-the-scenes deep-dive. This one-off featurette will explore Ahsoka’s journey from animation to live-action and discuss the legacy of the character. It will feature interviews from cast members like Rosario Dawson and filmmaker and Ahsoka co-creator Dave Filoni. 

September 20

Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of Secret Invasion

Hot on the heels of The Making of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Marvel Studios’ Assembled will drop The Making of Secret Invasion. Also a one-off TV special, The Making of Secret Invasion will explore how the series developed from its initial inception to become what it is. It also features exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, and extensive cast and crew interviews which include star Samuel L. Jackson talking about how it felt to put his infamous eyepatch on again. 

September 28

The Kardashians – Season 4

Picking up from Season 3, which concluded in July, Kris, Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, Kendall, and Kylie are back on screen this September. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians reality TV spin-off returns with even more salacious drama from the infamous Kardashian-Jenner clan, along with appearances from their current and ex-partners and close friends in the entertainment industry. Buckle up, it’s sure to be a wild ride. 

The Kardashians Season 4 premieres on September 28 with new episodes dropping every Thursday.

September 29

Marvel Studios Legends

Disney+ is adding two exciting new episodes to its Marvel Studios Legends collection at the end of September. 

Ahead of the release of Season 2 of Loki (coming in October), episodes titled Variants and TVA will be released. These five to fifteen minute episodes serve as helpful refreshers from MCU fans and set the stage for upcoming releases. Variants will give an overview of what exactly a variant is and which characters (or versions of characters) are one. Meanwhile TVA will do a brief deep dive into the origins of the Time Variance Authority, which was the setting for Loki’s first season. According to the synopsis, both minisode should answer any burning questions Marvel fans have.
