New Tiger King episode slammed as a ‘big disappointment’ and ‘cash in’ as Joel McHale hosts reunion – The Sun
NETFLIX has dropped a reunion episode for surprise smash-hit documentary Tiger King – but the one-off special has been branded a "cash-in" and a "disappointment".
The Tiger King and I was released on Sunday as an after-show special, giving fans brand new interviews with John Reinke, Joshua Dial, John Finlay, Saff, Erik Cowie, Rick Kirkman, and Jeff and Lauren Lowe, who now run Joe Exotic's GW Zoo in Oklohoma.
"This feels more like glossy, calculated damage control than an extension of what the rest of the series was built on," suggested IndieWire.
"Maybe there is more of a story to tell with some of the people in this show, but Netflix's latest smash hit deserves a little better than this forgettable epilogue," added TechRadar, while viewers at home almost made their feelings clear.
"True disappointment is the bonus episode of Tiger King," shared one upset fan as another added: "New episode of tiger king was a bitter disappointment."
Tiger King is based on the incredible true story of Joe Exotic, a wildcat enthusiast who owned numerous tigers, lions and other large animals he kept at the G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma.
Joe, real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage, is a self-proclaimed “gay, gun-toting cowboy with a mullet” who opened and operated the big cat exhibit in his late brother’s honor.
The G.W. Zoo gained popularity in the early 2000s, with tourists and celebrities coming for photo ops with Joe’s lions.
The series focuses not just on his bizarre behavior but also Joe’s undying hatred for animal rights activist Carole Baskin.
His loathing for her takes a much darker turn when he pays a hitman to bump her off, and he is now serving 22 years in prison for the hit.
