Octavia Spencer saves Ma from being a patchwork of horror clichés – The Sun

MA’S the word in this creepy psychological horror that finally puts actress Octavia Spencer centre stage.

From Blumhouse Productions – the studio that brought you Get Out, Insidious and The Purge – Ma introduces a new deadly female psychopath you will not want to party with.

Maggie (Diana Silvers) has moved to a small town with her mother Erica (Juliette Lewis) and on her first day at school she’s invited to hang with the cool kids.

They’re looking to score some booze and after a few failed attempts to get an adult to buy it for them, Sue Ann (Spencer), a lonely middle-aged vets assistant, agrees to help.

She soon offers her basement for them to party in but it becomes clear she has an ulterior motive and her obsession with the youngsters takes a sinister turn.

Spencer is in her element as this matronly madwoman who switches from delightful to deranged with as much prowess as Kathy Bates in Misery.

It is because of the Oscar winner’s increasingly disturbing performance that Ma holds up for the 100-minute runtime because without it, the film would be a patchwork of horror clichés.

There are enough scares to please horror fans and Spencer’s Ma will join the list of iconic horror villains.
