Animation aficionados are still waiting patiently for the next instalment of Rick and Morty after some jaw-dropping reveals in this year’s season finale. However, mad scientist Rick Sanchez could be about to make a surprise confession about his daughter when the Adult Swim series finally returns.

Fans theories are predicting unhinged inventor Rick Sanchez (played by Justin Roiland) knows more about his cloned daughter Beth Smith (Sarah Chalke) than he’s letting on.

The dysfunctional dad met up with his cloned offspring in the thrilling finale of Rick and Morty’s fourth season, which wrapped up some unanswered questions back in May.

After pondering the idea at the end of season three, it was unclear whether Beth had indeed chosen to clone herself, allowing one version of herself to escape her father’s foibles and travel the universe.

Her alternate self, dubbed ‘Space Beth’ by fans, finally emerged at the end of the latest season, but with a dramatic twist – Rick doesn’t actually know which of his daughters was which.

A heartbreaking flashback revealed the mad genius went along with the cloning process, but shuffled the two bodies so he was unsure whether he was sending his real daughter or the carbon copy into outer space.

Season four’s reveal was considered one of the bleakest moments of the show so far, but a perceptive theory may have unravelled the finale’s most pivotal sequence.

One viewer took to Reddit to propose Rick does, in fact, know which version of Beth became a galactic freedom fighter, and which stayed at home with Morty (Roiland), Summer (Spencer Grammer) and Jerry (Chris Parnell).

The Reddit user speculated: “Rick’s memory was recorded showing him turning around when Beth and her clone were being shifted around and randomized so he doesn’t know who is who.

“Couldn’t he have viably just watched the memory closely in the current day to see where the real Beth ended up?”

His machines are operating at rapid speeds, but there’s nothing stopping the ingenious scientist from paying attention or even slowing the footage.

In fact, this could be precisely what he’s trying to do when he watches his own memories from that day in the closing moments of season four.

Comments from showrunner Dan Harmon have also confirmed Space Beth will eventually make her return to the series.

Production on season five is reportedly making strong headway despite the coronavirus pandemic, so fans may discover more about Rick’s family life a lot sooner than expected.

A 2021 release date is highly possible, so this particularly convincing fan theory could be proven right or wrong some time in the coming months.

To add to the speculation, Rick and Morty’s fourth season finally confirmed Rick has the ability to time travel, he just chooses not to.

The Reddit post added: “Furthermore, he has the ability to time travel, couldn’t he viably go back and watch in person?”

Although they also conceded: “I guess the deeper point is that he probably doesn’t want to know the answer, but he could definitely find out if he wanted to.”

Rick shuffled the two clones for a reason, and even both versions of Beth admitted they were perfectly content not knowing which of them was actually conceived by their neglectful father.

Even so, there’s still a chance Rick knows a way to determine once and for all which of his daughters are which, and could spring an uncomfortable truth bomb on his family at any moment.

Rick and Morty Season 4, Part 1 is available to stream on Netflix.
