'Spider-Man: Far From Home' Ensnares 'Stuber' and 'Crawl' at Box Office
MCU film headed for $45.5 million second weekend
Sony
Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” will stay atop the box office for another weekend, as industry estimates predict the film will drop 51% for a strong $45.5 million second weekend total.
If that result holds, the latest Marvel Studios film will have a two weekend total of $274.7 million, keeping 21% ahead of the pace set by “Spider-Man: Homecoming” in 2017. While the movie will be challenged in the coming weeks by films like “The Lion King” and “Hobbs and Shaw,” “Far From Home” is currently on pace to gross $400 million domestic, a total that Sony has only reached with the first “Spider-Man” in 2002 and “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” in early 2018.
Spidey’s success meant bad news for this weekend’s two new releases: Paramount’s “Crawl” and Disney/Fox’s “Stuber.” “Crawl” grossed $4.3 million from 3,170 screens on Friday and is projected to meet Paramount’s target of a $10 million opening, but reception for this creature feature was stronger than its receipts suggestd with an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a B on CinemaScore.
The same can’t be said for “Stuber,” another film inherited by Disney from the Fox merger. The Dave Bautista/Kumail Nanjiani action comedy is projected to fall on the low end of expectations with an $8 million opening from 3,050 screens, with reception more tepid at a 46% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B on CinemaScore. Both films are falling on the charts behind “Spider-Man” and “Toy Story 4,” the latter of which is approaching $350 million domestic after grossing an estimated $21 million in its fourth weekend.
Completing the top five is Universal’s “Yesterday,” which continues to leg out solidly with $6.3 million in its third weekend. The jukebox romcom is projected for a domestic total by the end of Sunday of $47 million.
