Squid Game just dropped on Netflix and has already been a hit for the platform. The Korean game-show-style series is a twisted cross between Takeshi’s Castle and Gladiator, only this time the contestants have everything to lose. Fans have binged through the first season and now are keen to know when the show will return.
What is Squid Game about?
Squid Game is a unique series for Netflix, both visually and in its content.
Focusing on a fictitious game show, contestants are given a strange invitation to join in and complete a series of children’s games.
Struggling for cash, the players reluctantly agree but soon realise that this isn’t just a game of winners and losers.
Divided into teams, they each have a chance to win a 45billion won prize, but for those that lose, the cost is their lives.
Will there be a second season of Squid Game?
Squid Game is currently at the top of Netflix’s most-watched charts and enjoying a buzz on social media.
The show has taken viewers by storm, with the absurdity and unique premise capturing imaginations.
Sadly, there is no confirmation from Netflix or the team behind the show on season two, with writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk saying he isn’t even thinking about it for the time being.
Speaking to Variety, Hwang explained: “I don’t have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2.
“It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone.
“I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”
The showrunner also explained his inspiration for the show, batting off suggestions that he has taken ideas from other films and shows.
Since its debut, there has been some criticism that the series has borrowed ideas from films such as The Hunger Games and Battle Royale
However, this is a completely original idea from the filmmaker, who is also known for films such as Silenced and The Fortress.
Hwang continued: “I wanted to write a story that was an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society, something that depicts an extreme competition, somewhat like the extreme competition of life.
“But I wanted it to use the kind of characters we’ve all met in real life.
“As a survival game it is entertainment and human drama. The games portrayed are extremely simple and easy to understand.
“That allows viewers to focus on the characters, rather than being distracted by trying to interpret the rules.”
Clearly, season two is not out of the question, though there could be a significant wait for it.
As the show was a surprise hit, it is likely that a second season was never intended, especially since the filmmaker is known for creating completely new projects each time, even when his films are hits.
The earliest fans should expect a second season is late 2022, but if production doesn’t start soon, the wait could be longer than that.
For now, the show continues to be on top of the Netflix charts and it doesn’t look like that will be changing any time soon.
Squid Game is available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
