Stranger Things: Will Jim Hopper return for series prequel?
Jim Hopper (played by David Harbour) was one of the best-loved Stranger Things characters before his heartbreaking death in season three. While some viewers are convinced he could have survived somehow and return for season four, there is one way he could definitely come back – in a prequel series. Given the new prequel novel, Darkness on the Edge of Town by Adam Christopher explores the character’s history, this could be on its way.
Will Jim Hopper return for series prequel?
Jim Hopper was killed in the season three finale when he was seemingly blown up in a brutal explosion.
This came as he attempted to shut the opening gate to the Upside Down in the Russian’s laboratory under the Starcourt Mall.
He found himself trapped in the room while Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) revealed she needed to destroy it.
Deciding to sacrifice himself for the sake of the town, he told her to trigger the explosion.
The episode then cut to three months later as the characters seemingly dealt with his death.
This resulted in the Byers family deciding to move with Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) out of Hawkins for good.
However, there has been some indication that Hopper may still be alive given that the Russians referred to an “American” in the post-credits scene while others have suggested he may be stuck in the Upside Down.
While the creators of the series have kept pretty tight-lipped about whether he will come back, there is one way fans could definitely see him again.
In Adam Christopher’s Darkness on the Edge of Town prequel novel, he explores Hopper’s backstory.
The novel focuses on Hopper as he revealed to Eleven some long-awaited secrets about his previous life as a police detective in New York City.
Picking up on what his life was like in 1977, it examines him returning home from the Vietnam War.
According to the official synopsis: “Hopper is starting over after returning home from Vietnam.
“A young daughter, a caring wife, and a new beat as an NYPD detective make it easy to slip back into life as a civilian.
“But after shadowy federal agents suddenly show and seize the files about a series of brutal, unsolved murders, Hopper takes matters into his own hands, risking everything to discover the truth.”
There has been no news yet about whether this will be adapted into the television show or as a stand-alone series.
However, the author did reveal he angled the novel so that it could easily be adapted into a show.
He told Metro Online in an interview: “The book begins in New York and includes the blackout. When I was writing it, I did have in mind the episodic structure.”
He added: “So you can imagine if they did the eight episodes like in Stranger Things, the blackout would be the key moment of episode seven and eight.
“That pacing and structure of the story would lend itself to an adaptation.”
So far, fans have only seen a few glimpses at what Hopper’s life was like before in flashbacks of his young daughter Sara (Elle Graham) who tragically died of cancer.
However, given how much love there was for the character after his apparent death, there definitely seems to be an appetite for more.
