Strictly Come Dancing: Anton Du Beke reveals reason he lost to Kelvin ‘It was incredible’

The 2019 series concluded last month and the public voted for Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher and his professional dance partner Oti Mabuse lift the illustrious Glitterball trophy. Kelvin went up against CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual and partner Amy Dowden and EastEnders actress Emma Barton and her partner Anton Du Beke. However, Anton has now revealed the real reason they lost after fighting off all the competition to get to the final.

The Strictly Come Dancing final last month was watched by more than 11.3 million people on the big night itself watching as Kelvin was crowned the winner.

Viewers were desperate to see Anton finally lift that Glitterball trophy, taking part on the show since the very beginning in 2004.

This year he was partnered with self-confessed Strictly obsessive Emma Barton who also plays Honey Mitchell on EastEnders, but what was it that stopped them winning?

Anton has now opened up about the experience and even suggested we could see Love Island stars on the show at some point.

Anton told the MailOnline: “I don’t think people are blackballed from doing Strictly Come Dancing.

“They just choose the best mix of people from that year and see who’s available.

“I think it’s changing because for example, Saffron from last year, she’s a 19-year-old blogger I’ve never heard of but she was absolutely lovely and I thought she could have made the final, funnily enough.

“Of course Jamie Laing was supposed to do it and then Kelvin came in, it’s a weird and wonderful thing, fate.”

Anton hasn’t had the easiest ride on the show, with the likes of Ruth Langsford and Ann Widdecombe, who as we all know was dragged across the dancefloor by Anton himself.

But the last series saw him fall at the last hurdle, as he and Emma watched Kelvin’s emotional feat.

Anton explained it was ultimately Kelvin’s brave dance choices were the reason for his and Emma’s downfall.

He said: “Emma was terrific and we had a chance but Kelvin was remarkable in the final and to dance a rumba and a samba.

“I wanted to hand him the trophy just for being mad! I thought it was incredible he chose those two dances.”

Anton admitted that of course, Emma has been the closest he had ever been to winning.

He said: “Up until that point, yes. I made the final with Katie Derham but I remember it being a strong final as well.

“In fact, it doesn’t matter who you get, if you get someone that can’t dance a step, you have the judges in the studio and you have the viewers’ vote.

“So your job is to put the most entertaining number forward, which hopefully puts your partner out in a good light and then you hope to get either good marks or votes from the viewers.

“The thing about Strictly is you get all these celebrities who come onto the show, there’s no rhyme or reason why somebody would be better than anyone else – some have a bit of experience.”

“The whole production, the judges, those at home – everyone who has supported me, I feel so proud to be part of this.”

Oti, who was crying, said: “Honestly, I’ve been on this show for five years and I have never, ever met any celeb who gives his heart and soul.”
