Strictly Come Dancing: ‘They have to!’ Former star spills professionals’ backstage secret

The Strictly Come Dancing professionals work their magic every year to bring out the best in the contestants, with varied outcomes.

But there’s no doubting that they always work hard backstage as the amateurs must go through gruelling rehearsals on the BBC show.

One former star has divulged what the dancers indulge in to help them deliver their A-game.

Russell Grant appeared as a contestant on the programme back in 2011 where he was partnered with Flavia Cacace.

The astrologer has revealed what the professionals fuel themselves with backstage in the Green Room in orderer to keep their energies up.

He spilled to Express.co.uk: “They have to have sugar rushes, so a lot of the professional dancers would aim for the Haribo. Big packets of Haribo.

“I tended to have, not the Haribo, I had the chocolate because I’m a chocoholic so I would throw down the Twirls. That’s perfect for Strictly!”

Russell isn’t the only former celebrity contestant to speak about the sweet treats indulged in backstage.

Jonnie Peacock, who competed in 2017, spoke about it earlier this year on Sunday Brunch with fellow former contestant, Simon Rimmer.

Simon explained: “When you do Strictly in the Green Room there’d be loads and loads of treats as the dancers need their energy up.

“And you were always fully laden with sweets.”

While Jonnie then shared: “Literally, I just had Celebrations in my pocket everywhere I went.

“I put on… I put on about three kilos during Strictly. Yeah, I put on weight. It was not good.”

There’s been some exciting Strictly news released this week as Darcey Bussell’s replacement on the judging panel was revealed.

Motsi Mabuse, sister to Oti Mabuse, will be stepping into the ballerina’s shoes on the judging panel.

The former South African Champion has already acted as a judge on the German version of Strictly, Let’s Dance.

She said on her new position: “I am absolutely overjoyed to be joining the Strictly judging panel.

“I have so much respect and admiration for the other three judges and hope to add my own bit of sparkle to the show. I can’t wait to get started!”

Meanwhile, Strictly’s Executive Producer Sarah James said: “I am incredibly excited that Motsi Mabuse is joining the show. Motsi’s natural warmth, energy and passion for dance makes her the perfect addition to our esteemed judging panel.”

Strictly Come Dancing will return to BBC One in the autumn.
