Strictly threaten to boycott show after controversial Dev and Dianne exit
Strictly Come Dancing viewers have been left fuming following Dev Griffin and Dianne Buswell’s elimination from this year’s competition.
Despite landing square in the middle the leaderboard on Saturday night’s live show with their Cha Cha to Sam Smith’s Dancing With A Stranger, the pair failed to secure enough of the public vote to secure their safety.
As a result, they had to face the dance off against and Viscountess Emma Weymouth and partner Aljaž Škorjanec, who performed their Jive to Kids in America by Kim Wilde.
When the judges were asked to decide who to save, they unanimously opted to keep Emma and Aljaz, dropping Dev and Dianne – who earned straight nines just last week – out of the competition.
Radio DJ Dev couldn’t hide his frustration at the controversial decision and told Tess Daly: ‘I’m not going to lie I am absolutely gutted.
He then added: ‘But learning how to dance, hanging out with Dianne and the other pros and celebs… I’ve absolutely loved it.’
Dianne, who made last year’s finals with Joe Sugg, said: ‘Dev has been absolutely amazing. His work ethic is insane. I see him everywhere practising and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner.
‘Thank you so much for all your time and your effort. This boy has so much talent, I’m really sad he won’t be able to show you guys any more of it.’
Viewers were gobsmacked at the decision, and even threatened to boycott the show in the wake of the judgement.
Dev and Dianne – aka Team Red Devils’ – low ranking comes despite Chris Ramsey, Will Bayley and Alex Jones all scoring lower than they did during the main show.
All four judges – Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Bruno Tonioli – came under fire online during Saturday’s performance for their ‘seriously odd’ scores.
David James, who had been in the bottom two for the first two weeks, found himself jumping up the leaderboard after impressing with Nadiya Bychkova.
Karim Zeroual soared to the top of the leaderboard with his tango with Amy Dowden, and over Kelvin Fletcher and Oti Mabuse’s ‘seriously flithy’ rumba that left judges lost for words.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
