Susanna Reid apologises to lesbian couple over insensitive question

Susanna Reid apologised on air after she asked an insensitive question to a lesbian couple on Wednesday 10 November's stint of Good Morning Britain.

The ITV new show's presenter, 50, interviewed influencers Megan and Whitney Bacon-Evans about their decision to sue the NHS over its "discriminatory" fertility policy.

Megan, 34, and 33 year old Whitney have been together for 13 years and married for four.

They appeared on the show to discuss their hopes to make it easier for same-sex couples to have a baby through the NHS and have a baby someday.

As Susanna discussed the couple's plans of becoming having a family someday, she asked: "What are your dreams, what are your hopes?

"Who wants to be mum? How many children would you like to have?"

Megan quickly corrected Susanna as she said: "Well we both wanna be mum," before laughing off the remark.

Susanna soon apologised as she said: "Yeah, sorry – who wants to be mum as in… of course you'll both be mum, of course, I apologise for that insensitivity.

"But, who wants to carry the baby?"

Whitney then replied as she touched her wife on the shoulder and said: "Megan's gonna go first, hopefully, she's a year older, so it just makes sense.

"And we've purchased our sperm – we've got enough to have siblings as well. Hopefully in a few years I will have a go, so that's where we stand."

She added: "We've been together 13 years now and we actually picked out the names of our children 10 years ago now."

Despite Susanna's apology, some disgruntled viewers were less than impressed by the comment.

One infuriated Twitter user wrote: "Who wants to be mum? Can you hear us back there in the 1950s, Susanna? #gmb".

Another added: "I’m quite surprised how ignorant Susanna came across in that interview #gmb".

While a third said: "Unfortunately it was cringe worthy watching Suzanna interviewing. “Who is going to be mum? And who will be carrying” really?! Would you ask a hetro couple if they are planning on using donor sperm and will that make them a “real” dad."

Megan and Whitney are required to undergo 12 rounds of private IVF before they are able to get support from the NHS.

The couple have estimated the cost of a having a child for a female same-sex couple or single woman could cost up to £50,000.

Megan and Whitney's solicitor, Anna Dews from Leigh Day said: "Our clients believe that Frimley CCG's policy is blatantly discriminatory on grounds of their sexual orientation and puts them at a huge financial disadvantage by treating them less favourably than heterosexual couples in a comparable situation."

Meanwhile a spokesman for NHS Frimley CCG said: "The fertility services we provide are based on NICE guidance.

"While we can't comment on individual cases we will fully engage with any legal proceedings."
