Just as all TV series aren’t created equal, neither are all series finales. And, as we’ve just watched some major ones — The Big Bang Theory, Veep and Game of Thrones, for starters — the time seems more than right, ideal, to contemplate which shows’ sendoffs qualify as the stuff of legend.

So, we’ve wracked our brains and, by the hardest, whittled down from the hundreds of good series finales that we’ve seen a comprehensive list of the 15 greatest ones — of all time. As in ever. In history. (And yes, it was as daunting a task as it sounds!)

Our countdown includes the sublime swan songs of gritty dramas, bighearted comedies and even one supernatural series whose protagonist was, shall we say, a little long in the tooth. And our picks for the Top 15 aren’t all historical in nature, either — at least one finale on which we stuck a blue ribbon aired this month!
