The Big Bang Theory universe expands with new spin-off confirmed
Kunal Nayyar speaks about why Big Bang Theory ended
The Big Bang Theory universe is expanding with a brand-new spin-off series based on the much-loved sitcom. The original series, starring Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco, became an international smash-hit during its original run from 2007 to 2019.
Now, it seems there’s more than just an atom of life left in the franchise, with creator Chuck Lorre being tapped to expand the world beyond the nerdy scientists’ apartment doors.
As part of a massive slate of new and upcoming shows for HBO’s streaming service Max, it was confirmed a new series based on comedy is in the works.
Details are currently sparse, with it being noted the unnamed series will “derive from” what happened in The Big Bang Theory.
Production is yet to start on the show, and casting hasn’t been announced.
It’s also not been confirmed if any of the original lead cast – completed by Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik, Simon Helberg and Melissa Rauch – will return.
The upcoming addition will be the second spin-off created in the spirit of The Big Bang Theory, with the prequel series, Young Sheldon, continuing to this day.
Breaking away from the live-studio audience format of the original, Young Sheldon remains a comedy but also verges towards drama.
Following the life of young genius Sheldon Cooper (played by Iain Armitage), viewers got an insight into the Texas family behind the brainiac he becomes by the main series.
Jim Parsons, who played the original Sheldon in Big Bang, acts as a voiceover as he recounts defining moments of his life.
According to TVLine, there are currently conversations as to whether Young Sheldon – which is currently airing its sixth season – will end with a seventh and final outing.
In the four years since The Big Bang Theory ended, the cast has gone on to vastly different things away from their famed characters.
Amy actor Mayim Bialik, who has a real-life doctorate in neuroscience, has since continued in sitcoms with Call Me Kat – a US remake of UK series Miranda.
