The Last Kingdom fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Netflix film, Seven Kings Must Die. The film will star Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon) after he claimed back his homeland. According to the film’s IMDb page, actor Tom Christian has been cast in the role of Dunstan.

The Last Kingdom viewers were thrilled to hear Uhtred would be returning for a final time to end his journey.

After claiming back Bebbanburg in the season five finale, he believes peace can be maintained for a while.

Although not much has been revealed about the follow-up film so far, there is likely to be a time jump to move the story forward.

With this in mind, Edward’s (Timothy Innes) son Aethelstan (Harry Gilby) may well be King of Wessex.

The film is likely to draw inspiration from Bernard Cornwell’s novels, including War Lord.

By this time, Aethelstan is a well-respected leader and he could have some screentime with a new character.

Dunstan appears to be one of the new characters joining the film, and he could be based on the real-life Archbishop at the time.

Dunstan, who lived until the year 988, was a Bishop and an Archbishop of Canterbury, later canonised as a saint.

He was responsible for reforming the English Church and he served as a minister of state to several English kings.

As a child, he showed a passion for learning and artistic craftsmanship.

He became so well known for this that he is believed to have been summoned by his uncle Athelm, the Archbishop of Canterbury, to enter his service.

Dunstan was later appointed to the court of King Aethelstan and he became one of his favourite members.

Other members of the court envied Dunstan for his relationship with Aethelstan and they formed a plot to tarnish his name.

He was beaten and attacked by his enemies after being ordered to leave the court, and went to Winchester to serve his uncle, the Bishop of Winchester.

In his final years, Dunstan retired to Canterbury to teach at the cathedral school.

There is a chance the character is introduced as one of Aethelstan’s advisers in Seven Kings Must Die.

The young king is likely to face many threats as he knows his land is at risk of being taken by other leaders.

He also has the added pressure of fulfilling his family’s dream of uniting England as one kingdom.

Aethelstan may grow close to Dunstan and call on him for support whenever he feels conflicted.

Actor Tom Christian has previously starred in The Barking Murders, Gangs of London and Harlots.

He may also be recognised for his roles in Humans, Call The Midwife and The Royals.

The Last Kingdom season 1-5 are on Netflix now. Seven Kings Must die will also air on Netflix.
