The Last Kingdom season 4 cast- Who stars in the Netflix drama that follows Uhtred of Bebban?

THE Last Kingdom returns for a fourth series of the historical drama- promising more epic battles, medieval conflicts and a few new faces as fans speculate the future destiny of Uhtred and Bebbanburg.

Here's everything we know about the cast in season four…

Who is in the cast of season 4?

Most of the cast have returned for the fourth instalment, albeit a few years older and much more wiser.

We lose King Alfred as he was killed in the last series and his son Edward takes up the role as King

Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred

The 37 year old German actor looks set to reprise his role as Uhtred of Bebbanburg in the new series.

His character is based on a Saxon-born warrior who was raised by Vikings during the reign of Alfred the Great.

He faces an endless challenge of where is fate lies, fighting to save his region or rejoin the Danes who want to see it fall.

Dreymon told Syfy: "Even though he is super cheeky…he's very truthful, very loyal, very trustworthy."

"Even though he is being tested from both sides again and again and being distrusted, the truth is he does do what he says, and is a man of his word."

Fans will also know the actor from his notable roles in, Christopher And His Kind and American Horror Story: Coven.

Emily Cox as Brida

Emily, 35, plays the female lead role of Brida who has a unique bond with Uhtred by being Saxon in origin but being adopted by danes.

Her character is fierce and unlike Uhtred, she embraces her adopted Danish heritage and stays true to their pagan beliefs.

They have also tried to make things romantic between them in the past but it has always caused complications as Uhtred has constantly fleed and given her no stability.

This Austrian actress is also known for her role in Homeland, Jerks, Tatort and Silent Mountain.

Ian Hart as Beocca

Ian, 55,  plays the Saxon priest who has watched Uhtred grow up from a little boy to a man.

His character becomes peacemaker between Alfred and Beocca and his undying loyalty got him expelled from the Kings Court following Alfred death.

Beocca's job is to keep Uhtred on the straight and narrow and protect him when he goes to battle.

Fans were left heartbroken in the previous series when his wife Thyra (Julia Bache-Wig) was killed when a man set fire to her home because of her Danish roots.

He is a British actor best known for his roles on, One Summer,  Harry And The Philosopher's Stone, Boardwalk Empire and The Bridge.

More recently he starred on the comedy series, My Mad Fat Diary.

Timothy Innes plays King Edward

Edward is the son of King Alfred of Wessex who took up his place on the throne after he died.

In the previous season, the Danes planned to kill Edward but Uhtred decided to join forces with him and prepare him for the long battle ahead.

Edward ends up winning thanks to all the help and preparation he got from Uhtred.

Interestingly this series will cast doubts on their continuing kinship as fans will wonder if Uhtred will remain loyal or decide to swap sides.

Timothy Innes is a British actor who plays Edward and he has also starred in The Favorite, Daphne,

The actor used his twitter account to retweet an official tweet from the Last Kingdom account which has a picture of Edward captioned; "Now there's a man with the weight of Wessex on his shoulders"

Millie Brady as Aethelflaed

Millie Brady, 26 is a British actress who plays Aethelflaed- the daughter of Alfred.

She's a strong character who led Mercia's troops to help Wessex single handedly.

Married to Lord Aethelred of Mercia (Alec Newman) she took it upon herself to support Uhtred when her husband refused.

As a result of her defiance towards her husband he orders her to be killed by Aldhelm but when he meets her and sees her strength he vows to help her escape instead.

She escapes to a nunnery and ends up declaring her amorous feelings to Uhtred who turns her down in a bid to protect her.

fans will have seen her in previous roles in Mr Selfridge, King Arthur: Legend Of the Sword and The Witcher.

Magnus Brunn as Cnut

Magnus, 36  is a Danish actor.

He plays a viking warrior and cousin of Brida's late partner, Ragnar, who was murdered in season three.

Secretly having a hand in murdering his own cousin he makes a play for Brida and the two end up romantically involved.

He has starred in numerous Danish films including Land Of Mine and appeared in the eighth episode of Gentleman Jack.

A few days ago he announced on his Instagram page: "Aeelwith and Cnut can't wait to stir the pot yet again and cause a whole lotta trouble. Is this the next power couple in the series?"

Eliza Butterworth as Aelswith

Eliza, 26 is best known for playing King Alfred's wife Aelswith.

She loved her late husband dearly and is found all alone and without any allies.

Driven now to has to forge her own path after the death of her husband and her children on their own paths.

Viewers will recognise her from her roles in DCI Banks and WPC 56.

She will soon star opposite Colin Farrell and Stephen Graham in The North Water which is an adaptation of Ian McGuire's acalimed novel.

What will happen in season 4?

Fans of the series will see the season storylines jump ahead by a decade.

The next book in the series is called, The Pagan Lord and has been adapted for season four.

If Netflix adheres to the timeline, there could be a batch of new actors set to play Uhtred's children by Gisela.

Alexander Dreymon will return to our screens as the slightly older Uhtred of Bebbanburg.

He believes the timing is right to challenge his uncle Aelfrica who will be played by British actor Joseph Millson.
