'The Umbrella Academy' Season 3 Finale Title Hints Viewers Might See Hotel Oblivion

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 premieres on Netflix on June 22, 2022, and right now, fans know very little about the upcoming season. Overall, season 3 looks to veer away from most of the plot points of the third issue of the graphic novel titled “Hotel Oblivion.” However, one episode titled “Oblivion” makes fans wonder whether or not the building will make an appearance. So, what is Hotel Oblivion, and what role could it play in the Netflix series?

‘The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion’ features The Sparrow Academy, but not until the end

The fact that The Umbrella Academy Season 3 veers away from its source material has been common knowledge for a while. In the graphic novels written by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Sparrow Academy doesn’t make an appearance until the end of the third issue. However, fans watched as the Hargreeves met the group in The Umbrella Academy Season 2 finale. This implies the Sparrows would feature prominently in the following season.

Emmy Raver-Lampman, who plays Allison Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy, that season 3 would run “adjacent” to the plot of “Hotel Oblivion.”

Speaking with Collider, Raver-Lampan said, “We’re running adjacent to the graphic novels, but I don’t think Steve is beholden at all to the graphic novels, by needing it to be something that’s verbatim, it needing to reflect exactly what’s happening in the graphic novels and what’s happening on screen. But I do know that Gerard and Steve are in constant communication. So, I don’t doubt that they both know what the other has ideas in what the other is thinking. I think there will always be a connection there, but the further we get into The Umbrella Academy, the TV show, I think it’s finding its own way. It’s finding its own route, which is exciting. … This third season, we’re really, really doing our own thing, and I think the show has found some really cool plots to follow and explore.”

The overall plot of The Umbrella Academy Season 3 remains a mystery. However, the season finale titled “Oblivion” does hint we might at least see Hotel Oblivion.

Hotel Oblivion serves as a prison in the graphic novels

Because The Umbrella Academy deals with criminals with supernatural powers, a regular run-of-the-mill prison would never work. Little effort would be needed for the villains to escape. That’s why Reginald Hargreeves created Hotel Oblivion. 

At first glance, Hotel Oblivion seems like a luxury hotel. However, thanks to Reginald’s twisted mind, he imprisons the wrong-doers in rooms packed with self-help and rehabilitation books. The windows look out into what looks like another dimension, the food tastes horrible, and the televisions only show bizarre cartoons. 

Will Netflix incorporate Hotel Oblivion into ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 3?

Blackman has stuck to the general storyline of the comics so far. Although, with The Umbrella Academy Season 3 paving its own way, fans aren’t sure what to expect. However, with the finale of season 3, titled “Oblivion,” we at least get a hint that he plans to use some of the plot points from the third issue of the graphic novel.

Luckily, audiences only have to wait a few months before they can see for themselves. The Umbrella Academy Season 3 premieres on June 22, 2022.
