British TV and Hollywood star Lennie James sat down with the BFI on Monday June 22 to chat about his iconic on-screen career. During the interview, the Walking Dead co-star highlighted an often forgotten piece of trivia about his long tenure on the AMC zombie series.
Fans of The Walking Dead and its popular spin-off Fear the Walking Dead are still waiting for the franchise to continue after production was stalled by coronavirus.
The highly anticipated season finale, A Certain Doom, is expected to hit screens later this year though AMC have still not confirmed a release date.
During his unexpected lockdown away from home in Austin, Texas, TWD star Lennie James spoke to broadcaster Rhianna Dhillon for a new YouTube project, BFI At Home.
Lennie touched on his appearances in iconic British projects such as Guy Ritchie’s Snatch and Line of Duty, as well as promoting the home release of Save Me Too.

The actor also revealed the major differences in television production between the US and UK, including his time on Jericho and The Walking Dead
Lennie explained: “I remember very clearly when I first came to America and I landed my first television series here. And you go through different stages, so what you actually score is a pilot.
“By the time I had done the first 13 episodes that was the longest I had ever played a character in my life. So when they were all going we hope we get the back nine I was like, ‘how are we going to sustain this?’”
After making his mark on Jericho as mysterious covert agent Robert Hawkins, Lennie James later appeared in the sensational pilot for The Walking Dead in 2010.
Although the British actor has starred as devout father and resourceful survivor Morgan Jones for ten years, Lennie reminded fans his part on the show was initially a lot smaller.
He continued: “It’s a weird thing because I’ve been associated with the character now for 10 years.
“You cut to three years later and I’m signing up to possibly play a character that has gone on to last for ten years.
“But, having said that for the first five years of the show I only did three episodes and people tend to forget that because of my association with the show. They feel like I’ve been doing it solidly for ten years, but I haven’t quite.”

Morgan Jones first appeared in the pilot of the series where his life is saved by former series lead Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln).
The pair intend to stay in contact but lose touch, until it is revealed Morgan survived the zombie outbreak into season three.
Following Lennie James’ stand-out guest appearances, he was promoted to a regular role in the fifth and sixth seasons of The Walking Dead.
He then cemented Morgan as one of the most indispensable players on TWD when his character was transferred to a main role for the cast of Fear the Walking Dead in seasons four and five.

Lennie James may be an instantly recognisable face for UK TV fans, but is best known across the States for his memorable appearances on AMC’s post-apocalyptic epic.
Finally, the star commented on the legacy of the series and added: “When we started we had no idea what it was going to turn into. And anybody who says they did have some idea is a downright, absolute liar and I will tell it to their faces.”
Following his role on the US series, Lennie James recently starred as womaniser Nelly Rowe on Save Me, and will play a voice role in upcoming adventure sequel Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.
The Walking Dead season 10 is expected to conclude in 2020 on AMC.
