The Walking Dead: Real reason Rick Grimes didn’t kill Negan revealed in deleted scene
Negan (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) left many The Walking Dead fans devastated as he killed off several beloved characters during his reign or terror on the AMC series.
His war against the survivors finally came to a head in season eight but Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) ultimately decided to allow the barbed wire baseball bat wielding villain to live – in a jail cell.
Negan has spent much of his time locked away since then but he seems to be allowed out in the coming run.
However, while much of Rick’s friends were angry with his decision, he revealed why he kept Negan alive in a deleted scene from series nine.
In the scene with Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), which appears on the Blu-ray DVD release, Rick explains he had to honour those killed in the apocalypse.
As they walked through he woods, he told her: “Every day since I put Negan in that cell, I have this moment, usually right when I wake up, this feeling that I should go down there and kill him, [and] to keep going and finish them all [the Saviors].
“In that moment, it’s all I want.”
He went on to add: “But then I remember everyone we’ve lost, not just to the Saviors, but the whole way.
“And I know I need to honour them, to build life. Not take it.
“Because it’s us or the dead and every life counts now.”
Negan took the lives of Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) in the season seven premiere.
He went on to kill several others with Sasha Williams (Sonequa Martin-Green) taking her own life to try and kill Negan as a walker.
While she didn’t succeed, her move prompted the survivors into action to try and take down Negan once and for all.
The reveal comes as Negan star Jeffrey teased fans will be “surprised” by his storyline next season.
Speaking on the Walking Dead season 10 Preview Special, he explained: “It’s gonna be a really busy year for Negan.
“He’s been allowed to have a little bit of freedom within the community, and that doesn’t mean a lot, other than the fact that if you think about the fact Negan has been in jail.
“Now he’s out, and he’s kind of amongst the community,” he continued.
“Meanwhile he’s on lockdown at night, so he still sleeps in his jail cell, which I think he’s okay with.
“But yeah, he’s getting more and more freedom, and with that comes more interactions with some of our favuorite actors on this show.”
The Walking Dead returns October 7 on FOX in the UK.
