The world record Dwayne Johnson holds
When it comes to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, it’s hard to imagine anyone — even those who aren’t exactly fond of him — arguing with the fact that he’s a success in the entertainment industry. “The first third-generation Superstar in WWE history… Johnson was destined for sports-entertainment immortality since birth,” according to the WWE Network. The wrestling organization also noted that he’s “been dubbed The Great One, The People’s Champion, and The Most Electrifying Man in All of Entertainment.”
That’s surely why he was also able to make the jump from performing in the ring to performing in popular movies like 2016’s Moana, 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and its sequel, 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level. Of course, when talking about his success, you can’t ignore the fact that he’s a part of the wildly successful Fast and Furious franchise, even co-leading the Hobbs & Shaw spinoffs.
While there’s no doubt Johnson’s credits include films that are crowd-pleasers and action-filled blockbusters, part of the reason they’re such a success is, in part, because the star is “known to actively throw himself into promoting the projects he’s involved with,” according to Inc. “He markets them relentlessly, getting the word out to his fans in every way he can — and the results of that effort are seen at the box office.”
Johnson’s dedication to promoting both himself and his projects — as well as his willingness to connect with his many adoring fans — also earned him a rather unexpected world record.
You'd never guess why Dwayne Johnson holds a world record
During Dwayne Johnson’s career, he’s earned countless fans around the world, made a staggering amount of money, and been part of a record-breaking movie. However, the star himself also took home a record that wasn’t related to a film’s performance. Granted, he was given the record title for something he did at a movie premiere.
In 2015, Johnson earned a Guinness World Record for the most “self-portrait photographs (selfies) taken in three minutes” at the San Andreas world premiere at Odeon Leicester Square in London, according to the organization. There’s no doubt you’re curious about how many selfies it took to earn the record. The answer is 105.
Snapping the images “on the red carpet with excited movie fans,” each pic was taken with the camera on the star’s smartphone and had to include “the full face and neck of participants being viewable.” The images also had to be “focused, with recognizable faces and no blurring.” Because of these rules, “several selfies were disqualified,” meaning that he actually took more than the 105 that were counted.
Johnson was awarded with his record-related plaque at the event and took to Instagram to share a video of the moment, telling the cheering crowd, “We did it!” While he certainly had reason to be proud of what he’d accomplished, we have to wonder how long it will be until someone else manages to take 106 selfies in just three minutes.
