'This Is Us': What Happened Between Kate and Mark? Chrissy Metz Teases It's 'Something Traumatic'
As This Is Us Season 4 unfolds, fans are left wondering what happened in Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) relationship when she was a young woman. The end of the Oct. 22 episode “Storybook Love” left viewers with a lot of questions and Metz assures that fans will have answers soon enough, teasing that “something traumatic happened.”
The episode touched on something happening to younger Kate
The end of that episode saw Kate finding an old photo of her with her boyfriend Mark (Austin Abrams) and her mother, Rebecca (Mandy Moore), who said, “I wanted to believe so badly that you kids were happy, I didn’t see what was happening.” Kate responded, “I didn’t see it either.”
There were plenty of fan theories, naturally, as somespeculated an abusive relationship or something tragic happening with Mark. NowMetz is opening up about how something “traumatic” affected Kate’s life.
Metz shares more details… sort of
Since the cast members of This Is Us are sworn to secrecy about any of the storylines, it’s not likely that Metz would entirely spill the beans about what happened between Kate and Mark, but she did tease that some answers will come soon.
Metz told Us Weekly at the NBC x Vanity Fair Celebration ofthe Season event on Nov. 11: “We’re going to find out more information, butobviously we know that this has impacted her in such a way that she still talksabout it with her mother.”
She added: “It’s very clear something traumatic happened. So we’re going to get to see that, how she’s affected and how that is, of course, taken into her adulthood.”
Without going into too much detail about whether whathappened with Mark resulted in Kate’s struggles with her weight, Metz wouldonly share, “everything impacts everything.”
Kate has experienced many traumatic moments
This Is Us fans know all too well how much Kate’s father’s death impacted her life, with Metz sharing: “There’s nothing that can be separated from anything. Whether we believe it or we see it or not, it absolutely impacts every choice. Every experience shapes the next.”
She added: “Everybody’s traumas, they touch and change different parts of us. Jack was the first man she ever really trusted and loved, and it was her father. I think she’s looking for that, constantly, and maybe Mark’s not the guy that she can love and trust.”
As for whether Kate’s husband Toby (Chris Sullivan) knows what happened with Mark, Metz shares he may not know “all the details.”
Some of Mark’s actions in the episode may have been telling, as he showed up uninvited to a dinner at Kate’s home. Executive producer Elizabeth Berger shared with Entertainment Weekly: “That will definitely prove to be symbolic of Mark’s larger personality. He’s obviously somebody that goes for what he wants and feels entitled to show up to a place even when he’s not invited. We do feel like that is a little bit of a tell for where we’re going and what this guy is all about.”
