Tia Mowry Didn’t Land Her Next Big Acting Role in This Show Until Seven Years After ‘Sister,Sister’ Ended

Tia Mowry rose to fame alongside her twin sister, Tamera, during the 1990s with their hit show, Sister,Sister. The Mowry sisters have since built their own individual careers – with Tamera landing her co-hosting gig on the FOX daytime talk show, The Real – and Tia expanding her work in entertainment with roles in major film and television projects, as well as in the fashion industry. Tia has had a career of consistent success but many would be shocked to know that her first major acting role didn’t happen until seven years after Sister, Sister ended.

Tia and Tamera started in the hit show from 1994-1999. The premise of the show centered around twins who were separated and adopted at birth. 

Tia’s character was adopted by a single mother while Tamera was adopted by a well off couple, though her mother died a short time later. The twins bump into each other at a mall as teenagers and discover they are sisters, forcing their parents to come to the decision to move in together so that the girls can form a bond. 

Sister,Sister was picked up by ABC as a midseason replacement and aired as part of the network’s TGIF comedy lineup. The network canceled the show in 1995 due to low ratings before it was picked up by The WB in the same year. Finding its niche at its new home, the show was a hit earned several NAACP Image Awards, as well as Kids’ Choice Awards during its run. 

What did Tia Mowry do after ‘Sister,Sister?’

The Mowry twins began taking college classes before Sister,Sister ended so that they could have something to fall back on. Tia studied Psychology at Pepperdine University. 

In a 2018 interview with The Today Show, Tamera opened up about how she and her sister juggled academics and acting roles during that time. 

“Tia and I were part-time at Pepperdine University. We would go to class, do a rehearsal or shoot and then come back to class,” she explained. “We would do two classes every other day and then the show on Thursday and Friday.”

Tia also studied abroad in Europe where her focus was humanities and Italian.

Though there were very few acting roles in the immediate aftermath of Sister, Sister, the Mowry twins co-produced their own projects. In 2005, they starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie, Twitches, and reprised their roles in its sequel, Twitches Too. They also co-starred in the 2000 movie, Seventeen Again. 

Tia Mowry lands role in ‘The Game’ 7 years after ‘Sister,Sister’

Though the Disney Channel films were a success, Tia’s next big role after Sister,Sister didn’t come until 2006. The show was a spin-off of the UPN hit, Girlfriends, and was the actress’ first real adult role – a pivot from the teenybopper roles her core fan base was used to.  

The Game chronicled the lives of a fictional San Diego football team, it’s players and the women in their lives. Tia starred opposite of Pooch Hall, who played the character of rookie Derwin Davis. Tia’s character, Melanie Barnett, was an aspiring doctor who gave up the chance to attend Johns Hopkins medical program for one at a San Diego college for Derwin’s career. Melanie struggles to keep her identity while Derwin’s star rises. 

The Game was canceled after three seasons on The CW. The show was eventually picked up by BET in 2011 and lasted an additional six seasons. Tia and Pooch Hall left the show in 2015 after being demoted to side characters. Tia opened up on her reality show about the difficult decision to leave the show. She feared giving up the role after not working consistently for seven years after Sister, Sister. 

Luckily, Tia wouldn’t have anything to worry about after leaving The Game. She published a book on pregnancy in 2012 after having her son, Cree, and she and her sister expanded their brand by developing a line of baby products. 

Tia also landed more acting roles, including Instant Mom on Nickelodeon, her own cooking show on The Cooking Channel and she currently stars on the Netflix family comedy, Family Reunion.
