Unbelievable on Netflix: Where is Chris McCarthy now? What’s his real name?
Over eight hard-hitting episodes, Unbelievable on Netflix told the true story of teenager Marie Adler (played by Kaitlyn Dever) after she was a victim of rape in 2008. At the time many questioned her claim which subsequently led to her falsely denying the assault ever took place. However, following an investigation by two detectives hundreds of miles away in Colorado, USA, serial rapist Chris McCarthy (Blake Ellis), whose real name is Marc O’Leary, was found guilty.
Where is Chris McCarthy now?
Unbelievable on Netflix changed the name of the serial rapist responsible for the attacks.
In real life, his name is Marc O’Leary and he was indeed charged with multiple rape offences.
As detailed in the Pulitzer Prize-winning article, An Unbelievable Story of Rape, on which the series is based, he was sentenced to 327.5 years in prison for his assaults in Colorado.
O’Leary also pleaded guilty to two rape cases in Washington for which he was sentenced to a further 68.5 years.
He is still behind bars and is currently serving his sentence at the Sterling Correctional Facility in Colorado.
The attacker is now 41-years-old and 2019 is his eighth year locked up.
According to the Colorado Department of Corrections, his predicted date to be eligible for parole will be March 8, 2284.
Therefore, the serial rapist will spend the rest of his life incarcerated and unable to commit his heinous crimes again.
Unbelievable draws influence from the real-life events and award-winning article by T Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong.
It details just how O’Leary managed to evade capture and re-offend numerous times.
He’s even quoted in the article as saying: “If Washington had just paid attention a little bit more, I probably would have been a person of interest earlier on.”
O’Leary was meticulous and careful with each of his attacks, knowing to commit each one in different locations miles apart.
He made his victims shower or bathe after each attack while he watched, a factor which contributed to sergeant Grace Rasmussen [real name Edna Hendershot] (Toni Collette) and detective Karen Duvall [real name Stacy Galbraith] (Merritt Weaver) joining the dots with other cases.
O’Leary also had a notable birthmark on his left leg which was spotted by one of his victims.
As the evidence began to pile, the detectives zoned in on him.
After tracking down his truck to his home, a warrant was made to search it.
Inside, the police found the photos of his victims which he would take after each attack.
Among the photos was Marie and her claims were finally believed and subsequently acted upon.
Following O’Leary’s conviction in real-life, Marie was awarded $150,000 by the city of Lynnwood, Washington.
Unbelievable is available to stream on Netflix now.
