'Veronica Mars' Season 4 Fan Reactions: Why Many Won't Watch If There's A Season 5
The revival fourth season of mystery drama Veronica Mars has been available to watch on Hulu for more than two weeks now. If you’re planning to watch, here’s a warning: Don’t read any further. Why? Because, as is the series’ nature, there’s a massive twist involved, and trust us, you don’t want it spoiled. If you have seen the season, read on to discover how fans responded to it.
Here’s what happened in Season 4
Last chance for those who haven’t seen Veronica Mars Season 4 to turn away. Gone? OK, good. This season focuses on the Neptune Mad Bomber, who begins with the Sea Sprite Hotel and continues on a spree that confuses even the Mars duo.
In the end, they, of course, catch the bad guy: Patton Oswalt’s pizza delivery man Penn Epner. Everything appears to be back to normal. Fan-favorite couple Veronica and Logan celebrate by getting married. Then, a misread clue comes back to haunt our heroine, as the bomb planted in her car explodes just as Logan gets in it, killing him.
Fan reactions were largely negative
LoVe fans (as shippers of Veronica and Logan are known) make up a large percentage of the show’s audience. It’s hard not to adore these two together — Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring have incredible chemistry, and the characters have grown up together. So when Logan was killed, many fans did not respond well.
Reactions ranged from the dramatic shipper variety to the more level-headed viewer. After all, most who watch the show are there for the mystery but can appreciate the romance. The move was deemed a “cop out” by some. Others even went to far as to cancel their Hulu memberships in protest of the streaming service.
Jason Dohring responds in kind
Dohring is just the actor portraying Logan, so naturally, he didn’t have any say in his character’s offing. Still, he chose to respond to the anticipated fan disapproval in interviews conducted prior to the season’s release.
The actor understands how fans feel. “No one was probably more upset than I was,” Dohring said. “But for the good of the show…in that way, I can’t stay around.” He concluded: “I really appreciate you guys over the years, just truly. Thanks.”
Rob Thomas defends his choice
So who is responsible for Logan’s demise? That would be creator Rob Thomas, who said he was “terrified” to see the fan’s reactions. “It feels like I placed a bet…If you never get to see another episode because the fans hated it and turned on the show, then I lost the bet,” he told TV Guide.
Still, he defends his choice. “The hope we have going into these eight episodes is that we get to do more of them,” Thomas said. “And my belief is that those will be better with Veronica Mars as the lead of a noir detective series who does not have a boyfriend or a husband.”
What could we see in Season 5?
If Veronica Mars does get picked up for another season by Hulu (meaning that not enough people canceled their Hulu memberships in disgust), what will we see? Thomas has a few ideas for how to continue the more adult series moving forward.
For one thing, he sees Veronica leaving Neptune. “One of the ideas that I have is an Agatha Christie sort of murder in a manor house-style mystery, only modernized a bit,” he said, adding that he wants the show to “exist in any environment doing any case.”
