What Happened to Rio On 'Good Girls'? (Season 3 Episode 1 Recap)

Annie, Ruby, and Beth are back! On Feb. 16, 2020, Season 3 of Good Girls began. And there’s a good bit of action packed into this season premiere. A few months have passed since Beth shot “gang friend,” aka Rio (real name Christopher) instead of FBI Agent Turner when offered the chance. They’ve returned to their lives, but one question remains: Did Turner manage to save Rio’s life? Read on to find out.

Back in the game

The “girls” have returned to the hustle. All of their new gigs have an alternate use. Annie (Mae Whitman) gets the cash working as a valet. Ruby (Retta) steals bleach from her job at a nail salon. And Beth (Christina Hendricks) has the prime location to make their counterfeit bills: The cutesy gift shop where she works has a backroom where the owner prints their homemade cards.

Sounds perfect, right? They’ve got their process down, but the only problem is their bills aren’t good enough. But Beth comes up with a solution for that, too: Her boss, Lucy, agrees to design realistic tens for a “charity casino night.” And they’re back in business.

Of course, they’re not out of the woods. All of their hard work goes down the drain when Turner stops in for a “pop by,” insinuating that he’ll be back to check in again soon. They destroy everything they’ve made so as not to get caught.

A new friend for Beth

Meanwhile, their home lives aren’t going so great. Stan is stuck working security for the mayor, which means a lot of half-naked strippers and sleazy motels, much to Ruby’s chagrin. There’s also the matter of Sara’s medication, which isn’t covered by insurance. Dean has a job selling hot tubs, but they still can’t pay off their mortgage. And Annie is, well — she’s just Annie.

Luckily, Beth has a new friend. She spends time at the park where she would meet Rio, but now she’s hanging out with the mother of his child, helping her when she can in order to ease her own guilt. Rhea finds a way to return the favor, handing Beth a check to help with the mortgage

Rio’s alive and well

The question everyone has been waiting for is finally answered. Rio isn’t dead. He has been living in a hotel room while he heals. Now, Turner wants to know what he wants in exchange for the information he provides that will help them take down other criminals. Rio hands off a new name, and agrees to a white sand beach somewhere far away.

But as it turns out, he had something up his sleeve. Turner heads to a warehouse, but turns up nothing. On his way out, he takes off his bulletproof vest and gun — and then is promptly shot dead. Meanwhile, Rio checks out of the hotel, and it’s revealed that the vision of a tropical paradise he painted was just the billboard he saw outside his window.
