Curtis (played by Sam Retford) made his first appearance on Coronation Street back in May and has become a pivotal character to the ITV soap. The youngster has become the new love interest for established character, Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell), although he was hiding a secret from her about his terminal illness. In the week commencing July 19, 2021, the newcomer confessed all to his girlfriend’s father, Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson), about his heart condition but what is the heart condition he is living with and will he die as a result?
What heart condition does Curtis Delamere have in Coronation Street?
From his first appearance on the show, it was clear Curtis wasn’t telling Emma everything about him and viewers were left scratching their heads as to why the newcomer was being so secretive.
The mystery deepened when the youngster was seen talking to a young woman called Danielle (Lucy Dixon), despite being romantically involved with Emma.
He managed to brush the matter under the carpet when questioned about the other woman in his life, telling his girlfriend that Danielle was a brewery representative.
However, when he was spotted with Danielle again in recent scenes, Curtis made Emma believe he was cheating on her so she didn’t find out about his heart condition.
When confronted by Steve, the newcomer explained the mysterious woman he was speaking to was someone from his terminal illness support group.
With his own son, Oliver Battersby (Emmanuel and Jeremiah Cheetham), having suffered from a condition called mitochondrial disease before the illness took his life, Steve wanted to know more about what Curtis was going through.
The newcomer explained: “It’s a heart condition and beyond that, the doctors are baffled. I suppose I’m no different from anybody else in some ways.
“None of us knows [when we’re going to die]. My heart has stopped a couple of times. In layman’s terms, I was dead.
“I’d love to say there was a bright white light and heavenly choirs but nothing. I don’t recall anything until the medics brought me back around.”

Curtis Delamere
There has been no official confirmation on what the specifics of the heart condition Curtis is suffering from are and with the youngster stating medical professionals don’t even know, there might not be an answer to his unexplained illness.
But according to the scenario he explained, Curtis is likely to be suffering from an illness called Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
The condition develops due to the heart sustaining an unstable heart rhythm according to the NHS website, which results in a rhythm called Ventricular Fibrillation.
This means the beating of the heart is at a rate in excess of 250 beats per minute and can lead to serious complications.
An individual can suddenly collapse, have a seizure and go into cardiac arrest at any given time, with no way to realise when it might come on.
A defibrillator can often get the heart back in rhythm and revive the individual, which medical professionals could have done for Curtis.
However, the condition is very uncommon in young people, making it even more of a mystery if Curtis is living with the illness.
It is likely the youngster is suffering from another health problem he might not be aware of to have developed such a heart condition.
Steve asked Curtis to be upfront with Emma about his illness but he was reluctant to and as a result, Steve agreed to stay quiet.
Unfortunately, the secret didn’t stay harboured for long as Steve told his daughter her boyfriend wasn’t cheating on her.
Curtis sat down and explained to Emma what was really going on with him and although she was angry at first for not being told, she eventually forgave him.
Emma told her boyfriend she would be willing to continue building a relationship with him, regardless of the amount of time they have left together.
In recent scenes, Curtis began to feel lightheaded at the bistro where he works whilst talking to his girlfriend.
She informed the newcomer’s boss, Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney), of Curtis’ condition, despite him asking her not to worry.
Emma will continue to worry and it seems she will do everything in her power to make sure her boyfriend is okay.
Will Curtis Delamere die on Coronation Street?
Following Curtis’ introduction and the revelation about his heart condition, it’s not been confirmed how long he will be a character on the soap.
Given how much the youngster has stressed he could die at any minute, there is a chance Curtis could die at any moment.
Emma’s boyfriend is not yet a member of the regular cast so there is potential for the writer’s to pen an exit for the character.
Coronation Street has been exploring a number of health issues recently, therefore there could be some development with the storyline as well.
Along with the support of Emma, Curtis could undergo more tests at the hospital to determine how his heart condition will have a greater impact on his life.
Coronation Street airs Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm and Fridays at 7:30pm on ITV.
