What I Rent: Salsabil, £1,500 a month for a three-bedroom flat in Morningside
What I Rent is our weekly series exploring the reality of renting, from the beautifully decorated spaces to the mould-ridden houseshares for miserably high prices.
This time we’re chatting with Salsabil El-Awaisi, an interior designer who grew up between Dunblane and Dundee and moved to Edinburgh six years ago to seek out more work opportunities.
Salsabil runs her own interior design business, SE Interiors, and rents a three-bedroom flat in Morningside, Edinburgh, with her husband and their four-year-old son, Adam.
Hi, Salsabil! How much do you pay to live here?
We pay £1,500 a month for our rent and bills every month.
And what do you get for what you pay?
We have two double bedrooms, a box room, one bathroom, living room and a kitchen.
Do you feel like you have a good deal?
We have a great deal for the area we live in.
When we first moved in, the flat was so outdated and a real eye sore. That made the rent cheaper than other flats we had viewed in the same area.
Do you like the area?
We are based in Morningside and we love this area.
How did you find this property?
It took us four months to find this place as we were frantically searching on all the property pages until we found this on Rightmove.
How have you made the flat feel like home?
Because of the state this flat was in we had the OK from our agent to redecorate
it.
We have been transforming this place to a real beautiful home that we are very proud of.
We have been decorating our flat slowly and only really finished last winter.
Do you feel like you have enough space?
Yes, the high ceilings really help with given the illusion of more space in the flat. But we do have enough space for our growing family in this flat.
Are there any problems with the home you have to deal with?
We don’t have private parking and only have street parking, which can be very frustrating, especially when I have groceries to carry up the stairs.
Do you have plans to move again?
Not any time soon.
Do you want to own a place some day or are you happy to rent?
In the future we would love to have our own place, but we are very happy with renting at the moment and will be renting for the foreseeable future.
What I Rent is a weekly series that’s out every Tuesday at 10am.

How to get involved in What I Rent
What I Rent is Metro.co.uk’s weekly series that takes you inside the places people are renting, to give us all a better sense of what’s normal and how much we should be paying.
If you fancy taking part, please email [email protected]. You’ll need to take pictures of your kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom, plus a few photos of you in your bedroom or living area.
Make sure you get permission from your housemates! You’ll also need to be okay with sharing how much you’re paying for rent, as that’s pretty important.
We’re not just after the prettiest places out there, by the way. We want the reality of renting, so if you’re currently renting a place you hate, we’d love to see that too (and sympathise greatly!).
