BBQs are safe if you socially distance and take basic precautions, says NHS boss – The Sun

BARBECUES are safe as long as people follow social distancing, NHS boss Stephen Powis said this evening.

People will be allowed to meet up to six people in private gardens and public parks from Monday – and people will be able to enjoy a meal together safely.

NHS Medical Director Professor Powis said the risk of having a BBQ was no greater than having a picnic as long as everyone follows social distancing strictly, brings their own cutlery and food.

Professor Powis said: "If you're in a private garden having a BBQ or having a picnic, the fundamental rules around safety remain the same. 

"I think it's those general principles around safety and reducing the risk of transmission need to be applied in any setting.

Boris Johnson announced yesterday people will be able to go through each others houses to access gardens for the first time since March.

He said: "It's very important the really limited nature of what we're saying – we do want people to be able to see family and friends but it's got to be social distanced maximum of six people.

"What you can imagine is that there could be meetings of families in a garden or have a barbecue in a social distanced way , provided everybody washes their hands and exercises common sense."

But people will have to be sticklers for cleanliness to avoid sharing germs – this includes wiping down all surfaces in a toilet before someone outside the household uses it.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty warned: "If someone was to go into the loo, it is absolutely critical that they wipe everything down and wash their hands all the way through.

"Washing hands as well as distance is critical."
