Belfast plane crash 'leaves two dead' after aircraft comes down near airport

TWO people died after a light aircraft crashed near Belfast International Airport today.

Emergency services rushed to where the plane came down at Nutts Corner near Crumlin this afternoon.

The plane ended up in a grassy area in the middle of a wood, with part of it covered with a blue tarpaulin.

A witness told BBC NI he tried to help, adding: "It was not a nice sight, my thoughts are with the families of the two guys."

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they attended an aircraft on fire just before 12.30pm, saying: "Ambulance and PSNI are also at the scene. The incident is ongoing."

It is understood that the aircraft was not arriving or departing the nearby Belfast International Airport.

Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed they had also been called, with no patients taken from the scene.

The NIAS spokeswoman added: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a call at 12:23 this afternoon following reports that a light aircraft had come down near Nutts Corner."

She added: "NIAS implemented its major incident protocols in response to this incident and one rapid response paramedic, three emergency ambulance crews and four officers were dispatched to the incident.

"The charity air ambulance was also tasked."
