The Delta flight from Atlanta to Barcelona forced to turn back after a passenger suffered a horrific bout of diarrhea had to undergo a five-hour cleanup operation which included the entire carpet being torn up and replaced.
Passengers onboard shared updates detailing how staff used vanilla-scented disinfectant while they made the return to Atlanta on Friday night, where the plane was thoroughly cleaned.
After a five-hour wait, while crews tore up the carpet, passengers posted on social media that the plane was even cleaner than when they first boarded.
Following an 8-hour and 13-minute flight, the plane finally landed in Barcelona at 5:10pm – eight hours behind schedule.
One took to social media, saying that her partner reported that the offending excrement had been dribbling down the aisle.

‘The vanilla scented disinfectant used on it only made it smell like vanilla s***. After the plane landed, it was thoroughly cleaned. They didn’t leave until around 2:30am.
‘The flight was met by emergency vehicles and EMTs carried the sick passenger off the plane.
‘My partner said the plane was cleaner when they got back on at 2am than it was the first time they got on. No smell either.’

‘Both my wife and I were on the flight. It was a mess. The pilots made the right decision to turn around. The ground crew ripped out the carpet and put new in.
‘Considering the circumstances, the ground crew did a great job, along the attendants and the pilots,’ wrote John Hurdt.

The plane was met on the ground by emergency vehicles who took the passenger off the plane before it was cleaned.
While Delta acknowledged the flight encountered an unexpected medical event, the airline remained tight-lipped about the specifics.
