The family of Kenneth Noye’s road rage murder victim Stephen Cameron today slammed the BBC’s portrayal of him as a ‘loveable rogue’ in its TV series The Gold.

Stephen’s uncle Gary Cameron told MailOnline: ‘The BBC has made Noye out to be some kind of good guy when he is a cold-blooded murderer.’

He continued: ‘They have made him out to be some sort of Robin Hood character, taking from the rich. It’s unbelievable. I watched the first episode and was disgusted when I saw they have portrayed him as a nice guy, some sort of loveable rogue, which is completely wrong. It is not how he was. The man is a villain who is a ruthless double killer.’

Noye stabbed to death 21-year-old Cameron following a road rage incident on the M25 in Kent in 1996. He went on the run and became Britain’s most wanted man.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Stephen’s uncle Gary Cameron said: ‘The BBC has made Noye out to be some kind of good guy when he is a cold-blooded murderer’

After an international manhunt, Noye was arrested in 1998 when Stephen’s fiancée Danielle Cable, who witnessed the murder, helped identify him in a Spanish restaurant.

Noye, 75, was jailed for life and was released in 2019 after 20 years. He is the main character in the BBC series The Gold, which tells the story of the Brink’s-Mat robbery in 1983.

Noye, who is played by actor Jack Lowden in the series, was jailed for 14 years for his part in handling the stolen gold bullion and was out on licence when he stabbed Cameron to death in the road rage attack.

He had previously been acquitted of the murder of an undercover detective working on the robbery investigation.

Cameron’s murder does not feature in the series other than in the closing titles to update viewers on what happened to Noye and others such as John ‘Goldfinger’ Palmer who were involved in the robbery.

But watching Noye swagger about on the screen has brought painful memories back for the Cameron family.

Stephen’s parents Ken and Toni, who are both dead, never got over the murder of their son, according to Gary.

‘If Ken was alive today he would have been appalled by the series,’ said 61-year-old Gary.

‘He had come to terms with Noye being released, but he never got over his son’s death. He was a broken man from when Stephen died in 1996 and took his own life a year ago. He was so close to Stephen and from the moment he died he changed.

‘We used to go out to play snooker, but that all stopped. He just became a shell of what he was and was a broken man.

‘His wife Toni was never the same.’

Ken died in a nursing home a year ago with his wife passing away in 2016 after contracting sepsis.

Gary, from Ashford, Kent, said Noye’s murder of Stephen had a devastating effect on the family.

He said Ken had attended Noye’s murder trial and had been warned by the police not to show any emotion when the jury returned their verdict.

‘When he heard the guilty verdict Ken just punched the air and shouted out ‘yes’. He got a very disproving look from the judge but it was just relief that he got some justice,’ he said.

Gary said Stephen’s stepbrother Michael and stepsister Mandy have never seen or spoke to Stephen’s fiancée Danielle since she went into witness protection. Danielle, now aged 44, was given a new identity after giving evidence at Noye’s trial when he was convicted of murder.

‘Danielle was part of the family, but she has been taken away,’ said Gary, a consultant for a facilities management company.

‘There has been a ripple effect on the whole family. No one has ever seen or heard from Danielle. It is such as shame as we loved her so much and she was part of the family.’

Since the first episode of ‘Gold’ was shown on Sunday night, Noye is said to be ‘over the moon’ with the way he has been portrayed in the series.

A friend of Noye, who has also served time, said: ‘Kenny is over the moon. The media always put him up as a 24/7 ruthless thug, but he wants people to accept that he has served his time and lives his life quietly and is in a loving relationship.’

The killer has cooperated on a new book about the robbery and the murder of Stephen.

He has reassured his victim’s girlfriend that he is ‘not a danger to her’ following his release from prison, saying: ‘As I walk free, so should she.’
